Dicrocoelium dendriticum is called the lancet liver fluke because of its characteristic shape. Unlike most other digenetic trematodes whose life cycles involve aquatic or marine hosts, the life cycle of this parasite is completely terrestrial involving a terrestrial snail as the first intermediate host and an ant as the second intermediate host. The definitive host, which includes sheep, cattle, goats, pigs and humans(rarely), is infected when it ingests ants that are infected with matacercariae. In the definitive host the parasite migrates into the bile duct and causes pathology similar to that caused by Clonorchis sinensis. This parasite is distributed throughout much of Europe and Asia, and it is also found in parts of North America and Australia.

Dicrocoelium dendriticum ou petite douve du foie présente un cycle caractéristique à trois hôtes. Les œufs pondus dans les voies biliaires du mouton sont rejetés, avalés par un escargot. Il éclot dans le tube digestif et se développe directement en sporocyste puis passe à l'état cercaire puis métacercaire qui, enfermé dans du mucus, est rejeté par le pneumostome de l'escargot. Il peut être avalé par une fourmi et s'enkyste dans la cavité générale. Si la fourmi est mangée par un mouton, l'animal se fixera dans ses voies biliaires.

The CLIVAR Upper Ocean Panel(UOP) met for the first time 18-19 December 1995 at Scripps Institution of Oceanography. The meeting was chaired by Dr Ants Leetmaa; a list of Panel members and invited experts can be found in Appendix A. The main objectives of this meeting were to review the Panel' s terms of reference, define immediate goals, outline a strategy to meet these, and begin to develop a list of scientific topics which the Panel will investigate. The first day was devoted largely to discussions of the terms of reference, relevant national and international planning activities, particularly those related to CLIVAR, WOCE and GCOS/GOOS, and the status of the various upper ocean observing systems in place.

Two genera of ferns are known to be ant-fed, ant-house epiphytes. In southeast Asia, the genus Lecanopteris grows in much the same habitat as the rubiaceous ant-plants... Like Dischidia, Lecanopteris species display a variety of ant-house structures... Lecanopteris mirabilis has the simplest domatium, a solid, arching rhizome that hugs the tree branch. Ants live in the hollow between the rhizome and the bark.

Highly specialized domatia are found in southeast Asian species of the family Rubiaceae. These relatives of coffee and gardenias are the classic ant-fed ant-house plants.... The domatium of these epiphytes is the base of the stem which becomes enlarged into a tuber. Hollow, interconnected chambers form within the tuber as tissue dies back. The chambers have entrance holes which allow the ants access, and in some cases, tiny pores further ventilate the chambers... Nutrients released by decay of the ants’ waste, mostly leftover insect pieces, are absorbed by special "warts" inside the chambers...
