Cotard's syndrome involves nihilistic delusions about the patient's own body, such as believing that he or she is a walking corpse. The syndrome is named for Jules Cotard(1840–1889), a French neurologist who first described this condition in 1880. He formulated the syndrome as a new type of depression characterized by symptoms such as anxious melancholia, ideas of damnation or rejection, insensitivity to pain, delusions of nonexistence concerning one's own body, and delusions of immortality.

Délire de négation, décrit par Cotard en 1880. Le malade, après avoir développé des préoccupations hypocondriaques et des troubles cénesthésiques, sent ses organes se putréfier et se détruire. Puis il en nie l'existence et étend enfin sa négation au monde extérieur et à sa propre existence. N'étant plus vivant, il ne saurait mourir, ce qui est vécu comme une damnation. Ce syndrome, qui mène à la prostration anxieuse, parfois à l'automutilation et au suicide, est un des délires secondaires de la mélancolie. On peut le rencontrer aussi dans la paralysie générale et dans certains états confusionnels.

Beta blockers, such as propanolol, are not useful for people with general social phobia who are anxious in most social situations; instead, propanolol may be useful for people who are anxious about specific performance situations, such as presenting a speech before an audience... Propranolol falls into the broad pharmacologic category known as beta blockers. Beta blockers block specific sites in the central nervous system known as beta-adrenergic receptor sites. When these sites are blocked, heart rate and blood pressure are reduced and patients become less anxious. Because of this, propranolol is useful in treating chest pain, high blood pressure, and excessive nervousness. Unfortunately, propranolol often makes breathing disorders, such as asthma, worse because it tends to constrict breathing passages and sometimes causes fluid to build up in the lungs if it excessively depresses the heart.

Shaving the layers of the film from the emulsion takes practice and patience. An over anxious retoucher usually ends up with an uneven job, or worse yet a few deep gouges. Keep the blade in motion, moving with small strokes in one direction-never back and forth. After etching, apply retouching fluid to the emulsion if lead will be used.
