Detection efficiency. The intrinsic detection efficiency of any device operated in pulse mode is defined as the probability that a quantum of radiation incident on the detector will produce a recorded pulse. Especially for radiations of low intensity, a high detection efficiency is important to minimize the total time needed to record enough pulses for good statistical accuracy in the measurement. Detection efficiency is further subdivided into two types: total efficiency and peak efficiency. The total efficiency gives the probability that an incident quantum of radiation produces a pulse, regardless of size, from the detector. The peak efficiency is defined as the probability that the quantum will deposit all its initial energy in the detector. Since there are almost always ways in which the quantum may deposit only part of its energy and then escape from the detector, the total efficiency is generally larger than the peak efficiency.

If the nature of the article falls within one or more of these definitions, then the article must be classified and declared by the name of the class according to the precedence of hazard list in paragraph 6 above, followed by "n. o. s" and the name or composition of the article in brackets, except that any article meeting the definition of an explosive must be classified only as "Explosives, n. o. s. ". Provided the shipper proves that the articles does not conform with any class hazard defined in Section II, it may even be shipped without restrictions; the words "Not Restricted" must then be included in the description of the article on the Air Waybill to indicate that it has been checked.

Although consumers are actively involved in purchasing decisions, they often relinquish control to surrogates. These surrogates may collect market data, evaluate competitive alternatives, and conduct transactions on behalf of the consumer. Surrogate services have distinguishing qualities, such as: 1. extent of marketplace involvement, 2. personalization, 3. impartiality, 4. taste, and 5. control. The first quality is determined by how much guidance surrogates provide. Surrogates are personalized by their tendency to operate at the level of the individual consumer. Surrogates’ impartiality is relative to their vested interest in the choice of one product over another, and their advice is sought on taste and style. Control is determined by how much decision-making power the consumer relinquishes to the surrogate. Two types of surrogates are described, and survey data are presented that review functional and intangible surrogate service benefits.

The recycling of the solvent perchlorethylene used in dry cleaning.

The cleaning solvent perchlorethylene (commonly known as "perc") is used in dry cleaning, although it is a suspected carcinogen that contaminates groundwater and landfill sites when dumped. Technology is available that allows dry cleaning to reclaim most of the fluid for reuse.

The formation of the neologism dry greening appears to be a play on words in the form of a rhyme. This is a form of class-maintaining derivation as the new lexeme replaces "clean" in "dry cleaning" with "green" based on the new concept of a green transition characteristic of the late 1980s.

OBS

As no French equivalent was immediately found for this neologism, it is quite feasible to propose a translation. Based on the existing translation of "dry cleaning" and the "virage vert" of the 1990s as discussed in the article entitled "Les écolos au supermarché" in the November 1989 issue of L'Actualité, the following proposition can be made : le nettoyage à sec "vert". This signification of "vert" has also evolved in modern journalistic language, but has yet to be incorporated into current dictionaries.

(freight). A freight classification is an alphabetical list of articles, together with the "rating" which each commodity takes. The "rating" is the class or group into which the article is placed for the purpose of quoting freight charges. The "rate" is the charge, usually in cents per hundred pounds, for transporting a commodity or class of freight between various points. Ratings are found in the classification; rates in freight tariffs.
