The dwelling house and the adjoining land where the head of the family dwells; the home farm. The fixed residence of the family, with the land, usual and customary appurtenances, and buildings surrounding the main house. Technically, and under the modern homestead laws, an artificial estate in land, devised to protect the possession and enjoyment of the owner against the claims of his creditors, by withdrawing the property from execution and forced sale, so long as the land is occupied as a home.(Black, 6th ed., 1990, p. 734).

In the western provinces, dower and curtesy in the historical legal sense have been abolished and replaced with an equivalent life estate in certain lands of the deceased spouse, referred to as his or her "homestead". This term is variously defined in the several provinces, but generally, it includes the matrimonial home together with adjoining land. (Anger and Honsberger, 2nd, p. 212)

In America the term [asphalt] is used both for the naturally occurring product and that obtained from the distillation of petroleum. Elsewhere the artificial asphalt is usually called bitumen.

The heavy black line on the artificial horizon represents the horizon line. If the airplane is above the horizon, it is climbing. If it is below the horizon, it is diving. The greater amount of climb or dive, the farther up or down the horizon line is seen. The artificial horizon dial also has a black arrowhead showing the degree of bank to left or right. If the airplane is banked to the right, the arrowhead points to the left of zero.

L'horizon artificiel [...] sert à indiquer la position d'un avion par rapport à l'horizon terrestre symbolisé par une ligne séparant deux zones de couleurs différentes, l'une indiquant le ciel, l'autre la terre. L'attitude de l'avion est déduite de la position de cette ligne qui fournit des précisions sur le roulis et le tangage. Des marques sur les côtés précisent le degré d'inclinaison de l'avion et une bille située dans la partie inférieure informe le pilote du niveau de vol en dérapage.
