Order of mammals which have substituted hooves(kind of thick horny part enclosing and covering the front of the last phalanx) for claws and have adapted for running. They are herbivorous. The body weight is borne only on the hooves. The old classification separating the Perissodactylo(odd-toed Ungulates) from the Artiodactyla(even-toed Ungulates) tends nowadays to be replaced by one distinguishing between the Mesaxonia(with the axis of the limb passing through the 3rd digit, and the other digits vestigial or absent) and the Paraxonia(in which the axis of the limb passes between the 3rd and 4th digits, which are equal in length, and the other digits vestigial or absent). Artiodactyls are divided into 2 suborders : the Suiformes, which include the wild boar(Sus scrofa), a pest of the family Suidae, and the Ruminantia(ruminants), which comprise the red deer(Cervus elaphus) and the roe deer(Capreolus capreolus). The latter species is sometimes harmful.

OBS

The pronghorn is the only animal that annually sheds and renews the sheaths of its permanent horns. While it keeps only the bone plugs on the head, the horn sheath over them detaches every year.

pronghorn antelope(antilope) ;American antelope(antilope) : Although the pronghorn and the antelope belong to the same order, Artiodactyla, the pronghorn belongs to the Antilocapridae family, unlike the antelope, gazelle, etc. which belong to the Bovidae family.

Mammifère semblable à une antilope, qui possède des cornes fourchues dont les étuis, formés de kératine, sont caducs (tombent annuellement). On ne trouve ce mammifère qu'en Amérique du Nord, et il est le seul représentant vivant de la famille des Antilocapridae.

antilope d'Amérique : On devrait éviter d'utiliser le terme «antilope» pour nommer cet animal. Bien qu'il appartienne à l'ordre des Artiodactyles, l'antilocapre appartient à la famille des Antilocapridae, tandis que les antilopes, les gazelles, etc. appartiennent à la famille des Bovidae.

pronghorn : Bien que ce terme soit largement utilisé pour désigner l'animal, il s'agit d'un emprunt à l'anglais. On recommande d'utiliser plutôt le terme «antilocapre».
