A cutback is a surfing maneuver with which you change your direction on the rail by going back to the breaking part of the wave. See, when you’re at full speed, there's a big chance that you’re getting away from the breaking wave and heading towards the flat spots of the shoulder that don’t have the intrinsic power to carry you. So, you’ll lose speed, and you’ll need to get back to the wave to gain as much speed as you can. That's when you should perform a cutback. In that sense, a cutback isn’t only an aesthetic move, as it gets you back to the power source of the wave : its curl.

Surface cracking due to oxidation and shrinkage stresses, which shows as repetitive mounding of an asphalt surface, resembling the hide of an alligator.

Although heat is also a factor in the deterioration of asphalt on a roof, the real source of decay is the energy carried by the ultra-violet(UV) light of the sun, combined with the ready supply of oxygen in ozone. The "links" in asphalt molecular chains are hydrogen. The molecular bond is overcome by the strong attraction of the oxygen, which pulls the hydrogen away from the asphalt molecules. This process is called photo-oxidation, and these breaks in the "aliphatic" chain results in the shrinkage cracking common to asphalt. This phenomenon is commonly called "alligatoring" in roofing parlance, a term which describes the similarity of aged asphalt surfaces to an alligator's back.

erupting prominences. Although prominence equilibria are maintained on a long period of time, many quiescent prominences do ultimately erupt in a dramatic event lasting only a few hours. Incredibly, the eruption always occurs outwards, away from the surface, indicating that the magnetic field which originally supported the prominence has suddenly released its stored energy. This energy release is sufficient to drive the dense plasma outwards against the Sun's huge gravitational pull. Readying the electrotype shell. The metal layer deposited on the mould is called a shell and is 2/10 to 4/10 of a mm in thickness(8/1000 to 16/1000 of an inch)... The thickness is in function of the amount of time given to the process of electrolysis. Once the desired thickness is achieved the shell must be detached from the mould. This is not always an easy matter. If the mould is made of wax it can be removed with boiling water... Plastic moulds are removed by pulling them off, and lead moulds must be cut away along the edges. Shells are fragile and as they are not rigid they are sometimes damaged when being removed from the mould. In any case, shells must be backed to make them hard enough to print with. Backing is usually done by pouring a molten alloy made of lead(97%) and antimony(3%) onto the back of the shell.

This neologism is a compound. It is formed by putting together a word(claw) and a combining form(-back). Compounds are formed of various parts of speech, and often a compound differs in part of speech from its components(for example : claw(verb) + back(adverb)=clawback(noun]. A compound may appear to be quite self-explanatory, but often it holds a specialized meaning. Semantically, a clawback is a cutback taken several steps further. The words resemble each other, but the connotations are quite different : while a "cutback" might meet some public resistance, a "clawback" gives the impression of something virtually torn from the hands of the public and dragged away. "Claw" gives the idea of a vulture, and includes all of its negative implications. It should also be pointed out that "clawbacks" rhymes with "drawbacks", and while the latter is never actually seen, the reader likely makes a psychological connection between the two words, amplifying the effect of the former.

"Clawback" may be what is often termed a "nonce word" - a new word that is coined specifically for the occasion, a coinage which may soon disappear. Nonce words are formed with existing elements in the language, its standard words, combining forms, and affixes. Nonce words are often playful or fanciful coinages, many are puns, or are humorous.
