A generally asymmetric ridge formed in front of an advancing glacier by the pushing action of the glacier.

CONT

Bigger lakes often have a ridge of rock back from the shoreline. This is called an ice push ridge. It is caused by wind blowing ice on shore and it protects the area behind it from ice damage.

Crête généralement asymétrique composée de matériaux qui reposaient au front du glacier (dépôt d'épandage, till, substratum rocheux) et qui ont été poussés par le glacier en progression.

Les lacs plus gros comportent souvent une crête rocheuse en retrait par rapport au rivage, que l'on appelle une crête de poussée glaciaire. Elle est causée par le vent qui souffle la glace sur la rive et protège la zone derrière contre les dommages causés par la glace.

This election simulation scenario is designed to introduce children to the main principles of a real election. The teacher (or leader) chooses the candidates from among the following five characters: Charlie the Raven; Desneiges the Polar Bear; Max the Walrus; Neevee the Caribou; Sam the Grey Wolf. All the members of the group vote in secret for one of the candidates. The activity lasts an average of 45 to 55 minutes. After the election, the participants should be familiar with the rudiments of electoral terminology, know how to fill out a ballot, and understand that voting is simple, easy and important.

I’m Neevee the Caribou. I’m friendly. I enjoy the company of others. I travel in a great herd of thousands of my friends. We all get along very well together. I’m considerate of others and I have many qualities that set me apart and make me very special. I have a thick fur coat that allows me to stand on the tundra when a strong, cold wind is blowing and it's-35ºC. I have sturdy bones that help me walk hundreds of miles every year when I journey across the North and back again.

L'enseignant (ou l'animateur) choisit des candidats parmi les cinq personnages suivants : Charlie le Corbeau; Desneiges l'Ourse polaire; Max le Morse; Neevee la Caribou; Sam le Loup gris. Tous les membres du groupe votent en secret pour l'un ou l'autre des candidats. L'activité dure en moyenne de 45 à 55 minutes. Après l'élection, les participants devraient connaître les rudiments de la terminologie électorale ainsi que la façon de remplir un bulletin de vote. Ils devraient aussi comprendre que voter est un acte simple, facile et important.

Je suis Neevee la Caribou. D'abord, j'aime ça avoir beaucoup de monde autour de moi. Je suis habituée : je voyage souvent avec des milliers d'autres caribous et ils me trouvent tous très gentille. Et puis nous autres les caribous, on est comme les oiseaux. Quand l'hiver arrive et que la neige recouvre la toundra, on descend plus au sud, là où on peut trouver quelque chose à manger. Ça veut dire des centaines de kilomètres de route! Je vous dis que ça prend de bonnes jambes pour suivre le troupeau.

A short straight line terminating at the station circle on a synoptic chart and representing the direction from which the wind blows.

CONT

Wind speed is the measurement of the wind blowing toward your observation station. It is measured using a wind instrument such as an anemometer or visual observation using the Beaufort scale. The speed of the wind is recorded on your station model by adding hash marks and pennants at the end of the shaft you used to record the wind direction. The hash marks and pennants should be drawn on the right side of the wind shaft as viewed by a person facing the wind with their back to the station. [The figure] below is a station model recording clear skies, winds out of the northwest at 15 miles per hour...

The vertical axis on this chart is altitude above the station. ... The horizontal axis represents time progressing chronologically from left to right. Vertical lines may be drawn at equal time intervals. Along each of these vertical lines, the typical wind shaft and wind arrow symbol is drawn at each level. This symbol is the same as found on a surface analysis and indicates the wind speed and wind direction.

Winds blowing southward along the west coast of the United States--because of friction and the effects of Earth's rotation--cause the surface layer of the ocean to move away from the coast. As the surface water moves offshore, cold, nutrient-rich water upwells from below to replace it. This upwelling fuels the growth of marine phytoplankton which, along with larger seaweeds, in turn nourish the incredible diversity of creatures found along the northern and central California coast. Sensors such as SeaWiFS can "see" the effects of this upwelling-related productivity because the chlorophyll-bearing phytoplankton reflect predominantly green light back into space as opposed to the water itself which reflects predominantly blue wavelengths back to space.
