CONT

To light the pilot, [one must] hold down the button on the gas valve to start the flow of gas to the pilot burner. By holding the button down, [one is] allowing gas into the valve and, at the same time, blocking the flow of gas to the main burner outlet port while allowing it to flow to the pilot burner through a pilot tube coming from the gas valve body.

Anglais

Subject field(s)
  • Burners and Steamfitting
DEF

A gas burner in which the gas is delivered from the side(s) of the combustion chamber, resulting in a horizontal flame.

CONT

Inshot burners have become the dominant burner in North American residential gas furnaces, according to the American Gas Association. The burners have a single port, and fire into a pipelike heat exchanger. They differ markedly from older designs that had multiple burner ports with two-part heat exchangers, known as clamshells. Inshot burners have resulted in smaller furnace cabinets, a handy feature when remodeling a basement.

CONT

... the Multi-Port In-Shot Burners ... actually shape the flame cone to produce maximum heat with minimum fuel usage, and the heat exchanger is serpentine-shaped to provide maximum heat transfer.

OBS

Modern furnaces make use of four different types of main gas burners. These burners are : 1) drilled port; 2) slotted port; 3) ribbon; 4) inshot.... usually the drilled pot burner is made of cast iron. The others are made by forming steel into the desired shape.... The burner head is the top part of the burner. It is here that the ports are placed that determine the type of burners(drilled port, slotted port, ribbon, or inshot).... The burners parts are openings that release the gas and air mixture into the combustion chamber.

OBS

inshot burner: term officially approved by the Lexicon Project Committee (New Brunswick).

OBS

CONT

A floating flame is an indication that there is a lack of secondary air to the flame. In severe cases, the flame will leave the burner and have the appearance of a floating cloud. Again, the intermediate products of combustion are apt to escape from place to place wherever sufficient air for combustion may be found. This flame is sometimes hard to detect because, as the door to the equipment is opened sufficient air will be admitted to allow the flame to rest on the burner properly. However, the obnoxious odor of aldehydes may still be detected. Another possible cause of this flame is an improperly operating vent system. If the products of combustion cannot escape, fresh air cannot reach the flame

CONT

When a flame raises off the burner it is important to determine if it is a "lifting flame" or a "floating flame" :"Lifting Flames" rise from the ports to burn some distance above the ports. In some cases these flames will drop back to the port and lift again intermittently. They are caused by too much primary air. Decreasing the shutter opening will stop lifting flames. "Floating Flames" are long and lazy looking, poorly defined, quiet flames which roll around the combustion chamber sometimes completely off the ports. Floating flames result from too little secondary or "make up" air. Lack of secondary air can be caused by incorrect venting, clogged flueways, blocked secondary air inlet openings, or lack of natural room makeup air to the oven.

DEF

A process in which the fuel and air leave the burner nozzle unmixed and, thereafter, mix relatively slowly, largely through diffusion. This results in a long, luminous flame, called a diffusion flame, long flame, luminous flame, or yellow flame.

CONT

In the past, it seems that burners were almost an afterthought in port design-furnace designers looked only at how to match burner and combustion air velocities. However it was during this decade that operators realized that they could reduce NOx rates significantly by controlling the mixing rates of fuel and air. By delaying the mixing of fuel and air, operators then found that flame luminosity could be enhanced-thereby increasing efficiencies and reducing pollution. The delayed mixing would lead to increased cracking of the gas--which increased the radiative effect of the flames.
