Metering pumps move precise volumes of liquid in a specified time period to provide accurate flow rates. This class of pumps moves liquids in two stages : the suction stroke and the discharge stroke. One of the more advanced concepts is the laser/fiber-optics gyro. For this gyro a fiber-optics cable up to 300(100 m) in length is coiled many times around a loop, with both ends brought out to a laser. The laser beam is split into two beams, with the beams directed into the opposite ends of the coiled fiber-optics cable. Upon emerging from the opposite ends, they are recombined at the beam splitter to form interference fringes. Unlike the laser gyro, the coiled fiber is not a part of the resonant cavity and hence does not exhibit the lock-in phenomena; however, a rotation rate causes only a fringe displacement and not an integrating effect as in the laser gyro. Three main systems of methane drainage have been developed :(1) the cross-measure borehole method which consists of boring holes from 2¼ to 3¼ inches in diameter and 150 to 300 feet in length, into the strata above or below the seam, generally close to the working face. Linear proton accelerators. The design principle applied in linear accelerators for protons was originated by Luis Alvarez at Berkeley in 1946. It is based on the formation of standing electromagnetic waves in a long cylindrical metal tank, or cavity, as it is sometimes called. In the design that has been adopted, the electric field is parallel to the axis of the tank. Most of these accelerators operate at frequencies of about 200 MHz. During the time required for a proton to traverse one of these tanks, the accelerating electric fields undergo many reversal of direction. In Alvarez’ design, the decelerating effect of the field during the intervals when it opposes the motion of the particles is prevented by installing on the axis of the tank a number of "drift tubes".... The electric field is zero inside the drift tubes, and if their lengths are properly chosen, the protons cross the gap between adjacent drift tubes when the direction of the field produces acceleration and are shielded by the drift tubes when the field in the tank would decelerate them.
