How do you draw a straight line through the center of each price bar? Technically, you can’t, at least not on any chart where the prices jump around at all. But scientists have a solution to jumpiness : to "fit" a line that minimizes the distance from itself to each price along the line. Ratio charts are also called semilogarithmic or semilog charts. This particular chart is designed with an arithmetic scale(equal-unit scale) along the X axis, and one or more logarithmic cycles along the Y axis.... The general principles and mechanical details of drawing the data points and the data path are identical to the procedures for any line chart.

The interpretation of information mapped onto a semilog(ratio) chart is, therefore, somewhat different from the ordinary arithmetic line graph. The important difference is this : the slope of the data path on a ratio chart reveals the rate(percentage change) at which the Y variable is changing per unit of X.... the ratio chart(semilogarithmic variety) is measuring percentage change in the Y variable only. Since the X scale is arithmetic, changes in the X portion of the data path are arithmetic, not ratio(or percentage) changes. Semilog(ratio) charts are usually employed to graph data... when a Y variable changes by a large amount in a relatively short range of the X variable.

... a type of line graph that shows variations in the component parts as well as the total of a series. In the construction of such a chart, the variations of the largest component part are plotted first. The next largest component part is then added to the first component and the result is plotted. A system of radio navigation in which an aircraft receives interrelated pulses transmitted from ground stations and determined its position by plotting the observed intervals between the pulses.

In a deviation chart a column can extend either above or below the base line, but not both. This type of graph is good for showing how much results deviated from an estimate or requirement [and] for measuring net gains and losses and all similar plus-or-minus differences.

In this type of chart the bars extend to the left and to the right of a common reference line or division. Bilateral-bar charts are well adapted to the presentation of positive and negative deviations from normal, increases and decreases, gains and losses, or the comparison of two contrasting attributes.

The stratum chart is a detailed line chart, while the 100 percent chart restates the information given in the stratum chart.(...) Although the one-hundred percent chart is shown in stratum form, a parallel columnar version would be equally effective. In our illustration the bars are shown in vertical, or "columnar" arrangement. It would have been just as feasible to extend the bars horizontally, beginning at various levels of the vertical axis. The result is a horizontal bar chart, a form widely used.

Line graphs differ from each other by differences in scale rulings. The most commonly employed are the arithmetic and semilogarithmic rulings. (...) Arithmetically ruled graphs are designed to show changes in absolute amount. (...) Even when an arithmetic graph is properly constructed, it has severe limitations (...) [First], it is difficult to compare relative rates of change in the series. Second, when series that differ greatly in magnitude are compared, it frequently becomes difficult to determine the extent of the fluctuations in the series with the smaller values. Third, an arithmetic graph does not help the reader to determine whether one series of data is increasing or decreasing at a more rapid rate than other series on data that are plotted in the same field. (...) In order to overcome these limitations [one can] use semilogarithmic ruling rather than the conventional arithmetic ruling for line graphs.

A symmetrical distribution means that the middle class has the highest frequency and that the frequencies above the middle class of the distribution exactly correspond to the frequencies below the middle class. If the frequency distribution is shown by a bar chart(histogram) or a line chart(frequency polygon), a vertical line through the mid-point of the middle class may divide the graph into two perfect identical halves.
