Barographs represent an aneroid barometer used for continuous recording of the changes in atmospheric pressure over time... It is a recording aneroid barometer. The reading of the barometric pressure over time is produced on a paper or a foil chart, which is known as barogram.

Since the double-log chart is logarithmic on both the X and Y axes, the graph measures two percentage changes simultaneously.... when the ordered pairs of data are mapped on the graph as data points, the resulting data path reflects percent of change in the X data as well as in the Y data. Thus, the double-log graph is appropriate whenever it is necessary to measure the rate of change in both variables.... The mechanical process involved in mapping the data points onto the graph paper is the same as for any line chart...

Raster charts are digitized by scanning the paper chart. Each tiny segment of each line on a chart is converted to a raster picture element or pixel. These pixels are similar to a television picture or magnified newsprint in that they appear as dots on a grid.

The second type of rain-gauge is the autographic gauge which can be either of the tilting-siphon type or the tipping-bucket type. The recording chart on an autographic rain-gauge is mounted on a drum which is driven by clockwork and typically rotates round a vertical axis once per day. For a tilting-siphon rain-gauge, the rainwater in a collector displaces a float so that a marking pen attached to the float makes a continuous trace on the paper.

The Natural Siphon Rainfall Recorder provides a continuous graphical record of rainfall against time and can be supplied with either a daily or weekly clock.

Burner Efficiency Tests and Adjustments... A smoke spot tester is used to measure the soot content of flues gases. The serviceman will adjust the air intake band on the burner until a visually smokeless flame is produced in the combustion chamber. The probe of the smoke testing apparatus is inserted through the hole in the flue pipe and a flue gas sample is drawn through a piece of filter paper. The resulting soot mark on the paper is compared in intensity to a standard chart. The chart shows measurements labelled 0 to 9 and most residential oil furnaces can burn cleanly enough for a 0 to 1 rating... a number 2 smoke is ideal.
