The Government of Canada and its Provincial/Territorial counterparts introduced An Invasive Alien Species Strategy for Canada in September 2004. This Strategy aims to minimize the risk of IAS to the environment, economy, and society, and to protect environmental values such as biodiversity and sustainability. The strategy emphasizes four strategic goals : To prevent harmful intentional and unintentional introductions; To detect and identify new invaders in a timely manner; To respond rapidly to new invaders; To manage established and spreading invaders through eradication, containment, and control. Cette stratégie vise à réduire le risque que présentent les espèces exotiques envahissantes pour l'environnement, l'économie et la société et à protéger les valeurs environnementales telles que la biodiversité et la durabilité. La stratégie met l'accent sur quatre objectifs stratégiques : Prévenir les introductions nuisibles, volontaires et involontaires; détecter et identifier les nouveaux envahisseurs en temps opportun; intervenir rapidement face à ces nouveaux envahisseurs; gérer les espèces qui se sont établies et qui se propagent grâce à l'éradication, au confinement et à la surveillance. Environnement Canada est le ministère responsable des espèces exotiques envahissantes.
