The Mast Camera, or Mastcam for short, will take color images and color video footage of the Martian terrain. The images can be stitched together to create panoramas of the landscape around the rover. Like the cameras on the Mars Exploration Rovers that landed on the red planet in 2004, the Mastcam design consists of two camera systems mounted on a mast extending upward from the Mars Science Laboratory rover deck(body). The Mastcam will be used to study the Martian landscape, rocks, and soils; to view frost and weather phenomena; and to support the driving and sampling operations of the rover.

An offshore drilling structure with tubular or derrick legs that support the deck and hull.

[A] mobile jack-up platform ... consists basically of a dumb barge which can raise itself out of the water on legs to well above storm wave height, and upon which is mounted a drilling rig. Some of the hulls are roughly triangular in plan and have three legs, but most are matchbox and have four or six legs ... The jack-up barge is towed to location, the legs are dropped or jacked down to the sea bed, and then the hull is raised out of the water some 50 to 60 ft.

A jack-up rig is towed or propelled to the location with the legs up, and machinery is engaged to move the legs to the seafloor while the deck and hull ... remain above the water. Once the legs are firmly positioned on bottom, the deck height may be further adjusted and leveled.

The main caisson or column rising from the floating hull of a semi-submersible drilling unit to support the deck. Modern semi-submersible rigs have three, four, five or six stabilizer columns, sometimes separated by narrower intermediate columns which help to distribute the load. Stabilizer columns are made of large diameter tubes to give strength and stability to the structure when submerged or resting on the water.

The micro-WIS(Micro Wireless Instrumentation System) consists of tiny autonomous sensors for data acquisition... This HTD [Head-of-Train Telemetry Device] is designed to demonstrate the micro-WIS transmitter and recorder. One of the objectives of this HTD is to obtain meaningful real-time measurements for use in the orbiter's Environmental Control and Life Support System(ECLSS) operations. The micro-WIS transmitter's simultaneous real-time measurements of air cabin temperatures in many interior compartments of the orbiter will help ECLSS operations personnel address issues encountered on STS-88 and early International Space Station flights. Currently, only one temperature reading in the aft flight deck of the orbiter is available for adjusting model predictions for real-time environments. Micro-WIS will also reduce the time it takes the crew to obtain on-orbit temperature measurements and will increase the capability to monitor temperatures over long periods.... Micro-WIS data will also be used to validate cabin air temperature models that are used to make critical predictions of the dew point on early ISS [International Space Station] missions, which is important because orbiter cabin air exerts a significant influence on the entire station volume. Although the physical configuration of the air ducts in the orbiter cabin has been changed significantly, the sensors have remained the same and some temperature data has never been available.
