Cathodic protection involves the use of a galvanic or impressed direct electric current to render the pipeline cathodic, thus causing it to be a negative element in the circuit.

There are two methods of applying cathodic protection, active and passive. In either case the structure is regarded as the cathode in an electrolytic cell, the anode being an attached metal bar, bracelet or plate, and the electrolyte the separating medium.

A water-base mud in which water is the continuous phase and oil is the dispersed phase.

The oil is spread out, or dispersed, in the water in the form of small droplets. The oil droplets are tightly emulsified in the water so that they do not settle out. Owing to its lubricating abilities and other factors, the use of an oil-emulsion mud may increase the drilling rate and give better hole conditions than other muds.

The exploration department at Cogema Resources... recognized the technical difficulties and expense encountered in drilling deep vertical holes. The solution was a technique called navigational drilling(or Navi-drilling) that was used in the oil industry and, less often, in mining.... Simply put, navi-drilling allows operators to begin drilling a new hole 500 to 600 metres below the surface by using a pre-existing "pilot hole. "This significantly reduces costs as the same hole is used for up to six navi-drilling holes. A steerable motor with a rotor system turns a cutting bit. The motor is powered by hydraulic force created by the mixture of water and drilling muds pumped inside the drill string. The fluid is pumped through the motor and returns to the surface at a rate of up to 250 litres per minute. [Followed by an illustration of a schematic cross-section showing navi-drilling holes. ]

Further deep drilling at Southwest Oyu will await the arrival of navigational drilling equipment, which will allow Ivanhoe to more accurately delineate the deeper portions of the high grade porphyry zone (in excess of one half of a mile deep).

Newbergh Industries Limited ("Newbergh") has developed and patented a technology which will greatly enhance the steering currently being used in oil and gas field directional drilling. This technology, which is known under the acronym of "HANDS", which stands for Hydraulic Activated Navigational Drilling System, will be incorporated in a so-called benthousing, which will make this piece of equipment remote adjustable whilst drilling for the first time. Its implication will improve drilling performance in terms of speed as well as quality and will result in considerable cost savings for the oil companies and savings in energy to drill the bore holes.

As underground development proceeds to production levels, a return air raise (RAR) will be installed approximately 270 metres north west of the Hart Shaft and allow the Hart Shaft to revert to a second fresh air intake source. Les principales réalisations d'installations de faisceaux comprennent l'installation d'un faisceau de douze pipelines de 150 mm de diamètre sous la rivière Peene en Allemagne et de quatre pipelines de 300 mm de diamètre au-dessous du Mississippi aux États Unis.

Another important type of non-Newtonian fluid is a viscoplastic or "yield stress" fluid. This is a fluid which will not flow when only a small shear stress is applied. The shear stress must exceed a critical value known as the yield stress... for the fluid to flow. For example, when you open a tube of toothpaste, it would be good if the paste does not flow at the slightest amount of shear stress. We need to apply an adequate force before the toothpaste will start flowing. So, viscoplastic fluids behave like solids when the applied shear stress is less than the yield stress. Once it exceeds the yield stress, the viscoplastic fluid will flow just like a fluid. Bingham plastics are a special class of viscoplastic fluids that exhibit a linear behavior of shear stress against shear rate.... Examples of viscoplastic fluids are drilling mud, nuclear fuel slurries, mayonnaise, toothpaste, and blood.

[Géométrie des puits horizontaux.] Le rayon de courbure de la partie de trajectoire qui relie la section verticale à la section horizontale dépend de plusieurs facteurs : - le déplacement horizontal recherché entre la localisation en surface et l'entrée dans le réservoir, - la position verticale du début de la déviation («kick-off point»), - la longueur de drain horizontal à forer, - les contraintes de complétion. D'une manière générale les longs rayons de courbure, supérieurs à 250 mètres, permettent de forer de plus longues sections horizontales et facilitent la complétion. Les longs rayons de courbure sont surtout utilisés pour les puits de développement alors que les courts rayons s'appliquent essentiellement aux opérations de recomplétion.
