Not so long ago the use of beta-aminolevulinic acid(ALA) as a potential herbicide attracted considerable attention. The acid is present in every plant species and is used in the synthesis of chlorophyll and other compounds containing porphyrin. When used in combination with bipyridyls it causes massive accumulation of chlorophyll precursors which in adequate concentrations act as phytotoxin absorbing light and producing oxygen singlets(Duke and Lydon, 1987). As the presence of light is essential, the treatment is popularly termed as the "laser herbicide".

No virus has ever been causally associated with CJD [Creutzfeldt-Jacob disease]. If such a virus exists its properties are very unusual. It must be ubiquitous but normally non pathogenic. PrP [prion protein] would be essential for its infectivity e. g. perhaps serving as a receptor. Prion strains exist(more than 20 strains have been identified in mice infected with scrapie prions and several strains from humans). These strains breed true in inbred mice and differ in their incubation times and lesion profiles. This observation and the reluctance to accept because of precedence the existence of a replicating agent lacking a nucleic acid genome has led to the virino hypothesis. It proposes that a small nucleic acid in association eith PrP is the infectious agent. It is not fully consistent with all of the data and no such nucleic acid sequence has ever been detected.

In chymotrypsin, diisopropylphosphofluoridate selectively phosphorylates the serine residue at position 195, thus identifying this residue as essential for catalysis. When an enzyme phosphorylated by this reagent is subjected to partial hydrolysis, the phosphoserine residue remains intact and can be found in one of the peptide fragments. Chemical analysis of such phosphorylated peptides has given important information on the amino acid sequences near the active sites in this group of enzymes, sometimes called the serine enzymes. Serine enzymes inactivated in this manner can sometimes be slowly reactivated by reagents with a higher reactivity for the phosphorylating agent than the enzyme itself.

Acid catalysts are employed in such diverse areas as Friedel-Crafts reactions(qv) and reactions in the presence of clays. The isomerization of n-butane over an aluminum halide-hydrogen catalyst takes place only in the presence of olefins. Coenzyme consisting of pantothenic acid linked to a mononucleotide based on adenine. It is an intermediate involved in the transfer of acetyl groups (with which it combines to form acetyl-CoA) and other fatty acyl groups which are bound to a thiol group on the molecule. It plays an important role in fatty acid synthesis and oxidation, as well as in the first step of the TCA cycle.

CoA... was discovered as an essential cofactor for the acetylation of sulfanilamide in the liver and of choline in the brain. It has been established that CoA is involved in many biochemical reactions in the body as an "activator" of normally less reactive carbon fragments and a "transferer" of these fragments to different molecules.... After oxidative decarboxylation of pyruvic acid, CoA combines with the two-carbon acetate fragment to form acetyl-CoA or "active" acetate. Coenzyme A is necessary for the activation, synthesis, and degradation of fatty acids. Synthesis of cholesterol and ultimately the production of steroid hormones are also coenzyme A dependent.

There are two basic pathways whereby acid precipitation can impact a terrestrial ecosystem. It can impact directly on the foliar surface of the plants themselves, causing a direct effect on the leaf or stem of the plant, or it can indirectly affect plants, through effects on the soil. Regarding the latter, next to nutrient impoverishment and mobilization of toxic elements, acidic substances in precipitation can induce changes in root function, and reduce the number of essential microorganisms.

"Acid" and "acidic" are generally synonymous. However, in those instances where one is used in opposition to the other, "acidic" takes on the meaning of "acidifying".
