Sub-Rack Accommodations and EXPRESS Rack. The accommodations for research on ISS [International Space Station] are designed to give a user the option of using what amount to "central facilities" for conducting their research, or developing their own experimental equipment from scratch.... If no central facility meets a given investigator's requirements, they can consider building "investigation-specific" equipment that is unique to their needs. Such equipment will typically be allocated a sub-portion of an ISPR [International Standard Payload Rack] based on a unit of space called a Mid-deck Locker Equivalent(MLE). This unit has dimensions roughly based on the Space Shuttle's Mid-deck Storage Locker(MDL), which has an internal 0. 06 m³(2. 0 ft³) volume and approximate dimensions of 43. 2 cm(17 in) width x 50. 8 cm(20 in) depth x 25. 4 cm(10 in) height. Equiment that is built around the MLE size-concept is typically referred to as a sub-rack payload.

EXPRESS Rack Simulator. The ERS located in the PSC [Payload Support Center] is composed of three racks. The first is the EXPRESS Rack Mock-up, the second is the data acquisition system rack and the third is the water cooling rack. In addition to being able to accommodate payload that would mechanically interface with the 8/2 ER configuration, the rack will also accommodate different size ISIS drawers. There is a possibility that one of the CSA payloads will use a 12-PU drawer. For this reason the configuration of the EXPRESS Rack Mock-up was chosen to be 4/6, i. e. 4 MDL [Mid-Deck Storage Locker] and 6 ISIS [International Sub-rack Interface Standard] drawers. Essentially, the CSA rack is the bottom portion of the ER with 4 drawers added on the bottom. This configuration will permit the accommodation of single, double and quad MDL as well as 4-PU, 8-PU and 12-PU ISIS drawers. The ERS has the same mechanical interface and front panel layout than the EXPRESS Rack to provide higher fidelity during training for the ISS crew. This also provides a better verification environment. The ERS provides 28V to the payloads rated at 5, 10, 15 or 20 Amps but does not include the RIC or other ER equipment. This is why a Suitcase Simulator will be used to communicate with the payload in the rack.

The Payload Support Center(PSC) is being implemented at the CSA [Canadian Space Agency] to conduct payload activities such as communication protocols verification and procedure validation & verification. The PSC will support crew training and mission simulations. The results of the PSC and DFL tests will be used in the final certification of a payload. In addition, the PSC will play an important role during the on-orbit operation of a payload. The payload flight backup unit or engineering model will be installed in the PSC and will be available to help the payload operators in case of any on-orbit problem. By using a duplicate of the payload in the PSC, the operators, with the help of the technical team, will be able to duplicate the situation and determine the proper corrective procedures. Those procedures will then be either forwarded to the on-orbit crew or to the ground operations personnel to correct the anomaly. The PSC includes the EXPRESS Rack Simulator, the Suitcase Simulator(when required), a workbench area for payload developers and a connection to the CSA Payload Telescience Operations Center(PTOC).

The new MultiPurpose Logistics Module is twice as long and an carry up to 9000 kg of cargo to ISS.... The module carries up to sixteen refrigerator-sized(203 x 105cm) payload racks, five of which may contain refrigerators/freezers. Other so-called "EXPRESS Racks" can be outfitted with lockers for small experiments. Additional cargo can be carried in center aisle stowage containers.

The Columbus External Payload Facility(CEPF) is a set of structures added to the starboard end-cone of the Columbus module intended to carry four payload adapters mechanically similar to those used in the NASA ExPRESS Pallet(ExP) programme [RD 2]. Unlike the ExP, the CEPF provides one adapter location that normally points to notional zenith, one oriented to notional nadir, and two to starboard.

In summary, the CEPF provides suitable interfaces for a small sized remote sensing instrument, either internally pointed/stabilised, or tolerating large excursions around a nominal direction. Large fields of view can be accommodated. The ground track pattern is not optimised for localised studies, nor repeatable on the long term due to altitude variations.

The Leonardo Multipurpose Logistics Module, which was built by the Italian Space Agency (ASI), is the first of three such pressurized modules that will serve as the International Space Station’s "moving vans," carrying laboratory racks filled with equipment, experiments and supplies to and from the Station aboard the Space Shuttle. The unpiloted, reusable logistics modules function as both a cargo carrier and a Space Station module when they are flown. Mounted in the Space Shuttle’s cargo bay for launch and landing, they are berthed to the Station using the shuttle’s robotic arm after the shuttle has docked. While berthed to the Station, racks of equipment are unloaded from the module and then old racks and equipment may be reloaded to be taken back to Earth. The logistics module is then detached from the Station and positioned back into the Shuttle’s cargo bay for the trip home. When in the cargo bay, the cargo module is independent of the Shuttle cabin, and there is no passageway for Shuttle crewmembers to travel from the Shuttle cabin to the module. In order to function as an attached Station module as well as a cargo transport, the logistics modules also include components that provide some life support, fire detection and suppression, electrical distribution and computer functions. Eventually, the modules also will carry refrigerator freezers for transporting experiment samples and food to and from the station.

The Mars Express Orbiter is a cube-shaped spacecraft with two solar panel wings extending from opposite sides. The launch mass of 1123 kg includes a main bus with 113 kg of payload, the 60 kg lander, and 457 kg of propellant. The main body is 1. 5 m x 1. 8 m x 1. 4 m in size, with an aluminium honeycomb structure covered by an aluminium skin. The solar panels measure about 12 m tip-to-tip.

[The] EMCS consists of a gas tight incubator containing two centrifuges with space for 4 Experiment Containers on each rotor; also the life support and water supply system, the illumination and the observation system are located on the rotors. Suitcase Simulators are EXPRESS Rack provided portable units to be used at a payload developer's site to support their software development and to verify data interfaces between the payload and the EXPRESS Rack. The suitcase simulator is composed of a computer with cards and software to simulate the EXPRESS Rack and data. Cables and a laptop are provided for a payload to do an end to end communication check prior to delivering the payload to the integration site. Suitcase simulators are provided and distributed to payload developers based on their flight dates and developmental stage.

The MIM Base Unit will be the core element of a series of Canadian facilities that will be used to support microgravity research experiments on the ISS [International Space Station] in disciplines such as materials science, fluid physics, combustion science, biotechnology and fundamental physics. The EXPRESS Rack accommodates payloads compatible with the Space Shuttle middeck, Spacehab, and Standard Interface Rack(SIR) drawers, developed by NASA's Life Sciences division... The RIC [Rack Interface Controller] provides the communication link between payloads and the Spacelab data system and ground controllers, mimicking the command and control link for the International Space Station. Express Pallet. The ExPS is an unpressurized external equipment which, by means of adapter mechanisms, will support external payloads. Each ExPS will accommodate up to six payloads of up to 225 kg for a total launch of 1,36 tons. For each one of them it will be supplied power and data. The adapters will be fully compatible with external robotics operations (EVR) and with crew external activities (EVA). The full up ExPS will be compatible with robotics operations for removal from orbiter cargo bay and assembly in the ISS truss. The EXPRESS Rack concept was derived from the researchers’ desire to have a simple hardware interface and a streamlined process to get their experiments to orbit quickly. The EXPRESS Rack provides simple, standard interfaces. Two types of payload accommodations are offered : Middeck Locker type interfaces and International Subrack Interface Standard drawer interfaces. Middeck Locker interfaces are offered to allow payloads(a middeck locker or equivalent replacement container) that have previously flown in the shuttle middeck, Spacelab, SpaceHab, or MIR to transition to ISS [International Space Station] using the same interface. The Commercial Protein Crystal Growth-H experiment consists of 1, 008 individual experiments contained in a High-Density Protein Crystal Growth Assembly. This assembly is then stored in the Commercial Refrigerator Incubator Module(CRIM) at 22 degrees Celsius(72 degrees Fahrenheit). The Space Station crew will install the CRIM into a locker in the Space Station EXPRESS Rack 4 in the U. S. Lab, activate the crystal growth experiments and conduct daily status checks. These daily checks consist of checking temperature readings and cleaning the air filter. When the payload is scheduled to return to Earth, the crew will deactivate the experiments and return the module.

In designing the ISS [International Space Station] to accommodate sub-rack payloads it became apparent that several advantages would be obtained if investigators building MLE-based equipment [Middeck Locker Equivalent equipment] provided with host racks with a standardized set of interfaces. Based on this the EXPRESS rack concept was born. EXPRESS stands for Expedite the PRocessing of Experiments to the Space Station. The purpose of the EXPRESS rack is to allow quick(i. e., less than one year) and simple integration of payloads into the ISS. The EXPRESS Rack contains standard interfaces within an ISPR [International Standard Payload Rack] configuration to allow payloads quick and standard access to ISS resources. The EXPRESS Rack offers structural support hardware, power conversion and distribution equipment, data and video equipment, nitrogen and vacuum exhaust distribution hardware, and thermal support equipment.

The EXPRESS Rack utilizes an International Standard Payload Rack(ISPR) in conjunction with secondary structure and avionics hardware, resulting in a simple payload interface. The rack provides accommodations for eight middeck lockers and two Standard Interface Rack(SIR) drawers.
