Remote-sensing systems that operate VIS-NIR [visible, near-infrared] range typically include three channels that approximate the response of the human eye, and afford the opportunity to construct RGB [red-green-blue] composite image that resembles natural colour. Unfortunately, when displayed, many such images appear to have mostly tones of gray … Contrast stretching may help, but the colours tend to be far less saturated than we are accustomed to when observing or photographing in the field. Besides trying standard stretches, [there is] another way to enhance natural colour … The results of enhancing images to bring out colour are highly dependent on the nature of landscape and the image measurements.

SNOM is the acronym for "scanning near-field optical microscopy, "an alternative name for NSOM(near-field scanning optical microscopy). The basic principle of such a kind of technique is quite simple : light passes through a sub-wavelength diameter aperture and illuminates a sample that is placed within its near field, at a distance much less than the wavelength of the light. The resolution achieved is far better than that which conventional optical microscopes can attain.

Microscopists are now in a position to transfer the refinements of the past 100-year techniques for enhancing contrast and highlighting specific features, such as polarization contrast, immunofluorescence and phase contrast to scanning near-field optical microscopy. With existing scanned-probe microscopes we can "see" the nanometer realm of molecules and microcircuits. As the same technology is applied to optical microscopy, we may eventually come to see that world in the familiar terms of light, shadow and color.

Pour ce faire nous utilisons dans notre groupe les techniques de microscopie à champ proche à balayage : microscopie à effet tunnel (STM), microscopie à force atomique ou effet de force (AFM-SFM), microscopie optique à champ proche à balayage (SNOM).

Cette technologie d'imagerie éclaire la cellule en canalisant la lumière dans une sonde à fibre optique plus petite qu'un micron. La minuscule ouverture de la sonde (guère plus de 50 nanomètres de diamètre) interdit la diffraction des rayons lumineux qui réduit normalement la résolution en microscopie classique.

An earlier wake model of helicopter rotors is extended for wind turbine applications, the fast free wake method(FFW). The FFW was accomplished by partitioning the flow field downstream of the rotor into three regions :(1) the near wake, modeled as a series of straight vortex lines;(2) the intermediate wake, modeled as a number of vortex rings; and(3) the far wake, taken to be a semi-infinite cylindrical wake.

The Ravens/Kuafu project : Global auroral imaging is essential for quantifying energy input into the ionosphere and thermosphere, and for observing the 2D ionospheric projection of the dynamic global magnetosphere. The original Ravens concept consists of two satellites on identical elliptical orbits to accomplish that goal. Each satellite was to be outfitted with a complement of imaging instruments including a twin-head LBH [Lower Boreal Highlands] imager(for LBH-L and LBH-S imaging), an FUV [Far Ultraviolet] imaging spectrograph(for Doppler shifted Lyman-alpha proton auroral(imaging), a wide field of view FUV imager(for perigee imaging), and an ENA [Energetic Neutral Atom] imager(for ring current observations).

Evaporimeter(atmometer) An evaporimeter consists of a flat, porous ceramic disk(Bellani plate) in which water is drawn up by capillary action as water is evaporated from the disk. It is used to directly estimate crop evapotranspiration rate. Several commercial models can be easily installed near the edge of a field or on a roadway in a field.(The unit must be located far enough into the field to avoid field boundary effects.) One commercial model provides a green canvas-like material covering the ceramic disc to simulate crop leaf color. Reasonably good correlation has been found between field measurements and that calculated from Penman-type equations. Small difference in evaporation rates may be found between individual meters. Maintaining water levels and removal for freeze protection are necessary.

The Boltzmann equation, also often known as the Boltzmann transport equation, devised by Ludwig Boltzmann, describes the statistical distribution of one particle in a fluid. It is one of the most important equations of non-equilibrium statistical mechanics, the area of statistical mechanics that deals with systems far from thermodynamic equilibrium; for instance, when there is an applied temperature gradient or electric field. The Boltzmann equation is used to study how a fluid transports physical quantities such as heat and charge, and thus to derive transport properties such as electrical conductivity, Hall conductivity, viscosity, and thermal conductivity.

Far noise field of air jets and jet engines. An experimental investigation was conducted to study and compare the acoustic radiation of air jets and jet engines. A number of different nozzle-exit shapes were studied with air jets to determine the effect of exit shape on noise generation. Circular, square, rectangular, and elliptical convergent nozzles and convergent-divergent and plug nozzles were investigated. The spectral distributions of the sound power for the engine and the air jet were in good agreement for the case where the engine data were not greatly affected by reflection or jet interference effects. Such power spectra for a subsonic or slightly choked engine or air jet show that the peaks of the spectra occur at a Strouhal number of 0. 3.

In the atmosphere, trees and other grounded objects with points and protuberances may, in disturbed weather, be sources of point discharge current. Close to a pointed and grounded conductor that extends above surrounding objects, the local electric field strength may be many times greater than that existing at the same level far from the elevated conductor. When this local field reaches such a value that a free electron, finding itself acted upon by this field, can be accelerated(in one mean free path) to a sufficiently high velocity to ionize neutral air molecules, point discharge will begin. Different structures will yield point discharge under quite different gross field conditions, for geometry is critically important. Point discharge is recognized as a major process of charge transfer between electrified clouds and the earth, and is a leading item in the charge balance of the global electrical circuit.
