The angle defined by the incident radar beam and the vertical (normal) to the intercepting surface.

The incidence angle is commonly used to describe the angular relationship between the radar beam and the ground, surface layer or a target. A change of the radar illumination angle often affects the radar backscattering behaviour of a surface or target. The incidence angle changes across the radar image swath; it increases from near range to far range. In the case of satellite radar imagery, the change of incidence angle for flat terrain across the imaging swath tends to be rather small, usually on the order of several degrees. In the case of an inclined surface(slope), the local incidence angle is defined as the angle between the incident radar beam and a line that is normal to that surface. The local incidence angle determining, in part, the brightness, or image tone, for each picture element(pixel) and slope facet, is a key element in the prominent rendition of terrain features in radar imagery.

The azimuth resolution is 8. 4 m, with range resolution 9. 1 m to 7. 8 m from F1 to F5. Since the radar operates with a higher sampling rate in this mode than in any of the other beam modes, the ground swath coverage has to be reduced to a nominal 50 km in order to keep the downlink signal within its allocated bandwidth. Originally, five fine beam positions, F1 to F5, were available to cover the far range of the swath, the incidence angle range from 37 to 47 degrees. By modifying timing parameters, 10 new positions have been added with offset ground coverage. Each original fine beam position can either be shifted closer to or further away from Nadir.

The British device is described officially as a Laser True Airspeed System(LATAS) ;it might be more accurate to call it a "potential" or "future" airspeed measuring system, since its function is to advise the pilot what his airspeed will be when he traverses a zone located a short distance ahead of his current position at any given moment. Normally this distance is in the 500-600 m range, far enough ahead at normal approach speeds of 360-450 km/h(200-250kn) to give the pilot some four to six seconds warning to recognize an impending change in true airspeed [due to turbulence] and to take any necessary corrective action.
