Le soudage avec arc court (dit aussi : en régime sous-critique) donne lieu à un transfert par courts-circuits : le fil est fin (diamètre de 0,6 à 1,2 mm), le grossissement de la goutte entraîne une diminution de la longueur d'arc et une baisse de tension. Lorsque la goutte touche le bain (longueur d'arc nulle), la tension tend vers 0 et l'arc s'éteint. Le courant continuant de passer et la résistance de la portion de circuit comprise entre le tube de contact et la pièce étant très faible, l'intensité croît [...] l'effet de pincement augmente [dû à la puissance des forces électromagnétiques]. Soumise à cet effet à l'action de la tension superficielle du bain, la goutte se détache. Puis la tension s'élève et l'arc se réamorce. Une autre goutte se forme et le cycle recommence. La durée totale d'un tel cycle est de l'ordre de 1 à 2 centièmes de seconde.

A torch in which temperatures as high as 50, 000º are achieved by injecting a plasma gas tangentially into an electric arc formed between electrodes in a chamber; the resulting vortex of hot gases emerges at very high speed through a hole in the negative electrode, to form a jet for welding, spraying of molten metal, and cutting of hard rock or hard metals.

Vacuum Plasma Deposition (VPD). A thermal spraying process variation utilizing a plasma gun confined to a solid enclosure. The enclosure is evacuated and the spraying performed under low pressure, usually below 10 Toff. Also Vacuum Plasma Spray, Low Pressure Plasma Spray (LPPS).

Highly refractory coating materials such as oxides, carbides, and nitrides, can be applied by plasma-arc spraying. Several chemical definitions relate to welding. One is known as burning or oxidation. This takes place when any substance combines with oxygen usually at high temperatures. An example of this is the combining of acetylene with oxygen. This produces carbon dioxide plus water plus a large amount of heat. We use the heat produced by the burning of acetylene in the flame of the oxyacetylene torch to make welds.

The plasma-keyhole method is a welding process where the gas flow is restricted through a reduction of the gas orifice. This increases the gas velocity and the arc temperature. Severe constriction of the gas flow produces a cutting arc, which is utilised in plasma arc cutting(PAC). The plasma arc blows a hole through the joint of the plate. Behind the hole the molten metal flows together filling the hole, due to the gravity forces, surface tension and the gas pressure from the shielding gas.
