GAS OPERATION SYSTEM [7 fiches]

Fiche 1 2016-12-21

Anglais

Subject field(s)
  • Soil Pollution
CONT

Previous exposures to contaminated soil gas have been documented in the residential areas to the west of the landfill. These exposures were from inhalation of volatile organic compounds in indoor air.... Installation and operation of the active soil gas venting system has reduced or eliminated this exposure. However, at times the system has been interrupted, resulting in some subsurface landfill gas migrating off-site.

CONT

[In a chapter dealing with groundwaters and soils.] Enhanced biodegradation during soil gas venting: soil bioventing and vapour-phase biotreatment.

CONT

Efforts to characterize and monitor VOCs [volatile organic compounds] and methane often include analyzing the distribution and concentration of VOCs and methane in soil gas in deep vadose (unsaturated) zones beneath a contaminated site. These factors are integral to determining transport to the underlying aquifer and to evaluate potential remediation alternatives such as soil-gas venting.

OBS

In 1977, following extensive public hearings in both countries, the Governments of Canada and the United States of America executed an "Agreement on Principles Applicable to a Northern Natural Gas Pipeline". This agreement provided a framework for the construction and operation of the Alaska Natural Gas Transportation System("ANGTS"), a pipeline megaproject intended to transport Alaskan and Northern Canadian natural gas to southern markets. In Canada, the project is also referred to as the Alaska Highway Gas Pipeline Project.

OBS

CONT

The GDS [Gas Delivery System] is a 4-PU passive drawer. There are no rack data or power connections. The drawer will contain a Dapco-sealed Minicel foam block wrapped in beta cloth capable of storing up to five bottles of calibration and/or respiratory gas mixtures. The drawer includes 2 Lexan plates that will be attached to the internal surface of the drawer side panels. The Lexan plates will center the foam block in the drawer and have grooves that allow the bottle retention plate(guillotine) to slide in perpendicular to the Lexan plates in 2 locations. The guillotine is placed in front of the bottles for launch and landing and placed behind the bottles for operation.

DEF

A gas-lift system in which the gas that is injected and subsequently produced is recompressed and reinjected into the well, thus effecting a continuous, closed system that does not require the introduction of additional gas from an extraneous source for operation, except that needed to make up losses in the system.

Other blow molding operations.... Fluorination surface treatment is a process to improve the gas barrier of polyethylene to nonpolar solvents. A barrier is created by the chemical reaction of the fluorine and the polyethylene, which form a thin(20-40 nm) fluorocarbon layer on the bottle surface. Two systems are available for creating the layer. The "in-process" system uses fluorine as a part of the parison expand gas in the blowing operation. The "post-treatment" system requires bottles to be placed in an enclosed chamber filled with fluorine gas. The method forms a barrier layer on both the inside and outside surfaces. This surface treatment allows low-cost, blow-molded polyethylene bottles to be used for paint, paint thinner, lighter fluid, polishes, cleaning solvents, cosmetics, and toiletries. The approach can replace other higher cost resins or coextrusion processes.

Flash Calcining. Flash or gas suspension calcining is a recent development, and at least two manufacturers are promoting this technology as another alternative for pulp mill lime reburning. Fuller, for example, has over 25 flash calcining systems in operation on a variety of materials. The heart of the system is a swirl-type furnace in which the combustion of fuel is in intimate contact with the material being calcined. Fuller claims that the turbulent swirling mixture produces a uniform temperature profile, and that conventional flame temperatures are never encountered because the material absorbs the excess heat instantaneously.
