Le gaz combustible aspire, par des orifices réglables à l'aide d'une bague qui les obture plus ou moins, l'air de combustion, avec lequel il se mélange dans une buse. L'ensemble est allumé à l'extrémité de celle-ci, et la flamme s'y fixe, si la vitesse du courant gazeux n'est ni trop faible ni trop forte. Si cette vitesse était trop faible, la flamme brûlerait à l'intérieur du bec; si elle était trop forte, la flamme s'éteindrait, le gaz s'écoulant plus vite qu'il ne brûle.

A form of gas or liquid flowmeter consisting of a diaphragm in which there is an orifice placed transversely across a pipe, the difference in pressure on the two sides of the diaphragm is a measure of flow velocity.

An orifice meter is an inferential meter in which the fluid velocity and flowrate are inferred from the pressure drop occurring through the known area of an orifice plate. Specifically, orifice meter flow is calculated from the flowing gas pressure and temperature, differential pressure drop occurring across the restriction of the meter's orifice plate, the meter geometry including the meter tube's inside diameter and orifice plate bore, and the gas composition.

A torch in which temperatures as high as 50,000º are achieved by injecting a plasma gas tangentially into an electric arc formed between electrodes in a chamber; the resulting vortex of hot gases emerges at very high speed through a hole in the negative electrode, to form a jet for welding, spraying of molten metal, and cutting of hard rock or hard metals.

Vacuum Plasma Deposition (VPD). A thermal spraying process variation utilizing a plasma gun confined to a solid enclosure. The enclosure is evacuated and the spraying performed under low pressure, usually below 10 Toff. Also Vacuum Plasma Spray, Low Pressure Plasma Spray (LPPS).

Highly refractory coating materials such as oxides, carbides, and nitrides, can be applied by plasma-arc spraying. In this process temperatures of 20, 000°F(12, 000°C) or more may be produced by partially ionizing a gas(nitrogen or argon) in an electric arc and passing the gas through a small orifice to produce a jet of hot gas moving at high velocity.

The plasma-keyhole method is a welding process where the gas flow is restricted through a reduction of the gas orifice. This increases the gas velocity and the arc temperature. Severe constriction of the gas flow produces a cutting arc, which is utilised in plasma arc cutting(PAC). The plasma arc blows a hole through the joint of the plate. Behind the hole the molten metal flows together filling the hole, due to the gravity forces, surface tension and the gas pressure from the shielding gas.

It is a relatively high capacity partial-premix type of gun burner, which uses the kinetic energy of the gas stream issuing from the orifice to bring in at least part of the air required for combustion. A wide range of control of flame characteristics is obtained by adjustment of the primary air, thus causing combustion to be delayed until secondary air can reach the air-fuel mixture.

A device by means of which a liquid or gaseous sample is introduced directly into the chromatographic column or is swept into the column by the mobile phase.

An injection port is necessary in all g. c. [gas chromatography] and h. p. l. c. [high-performance liquid chromatography] systems in which syringe injection is employed. The injection port joins the top of the column to the mobile phase supply line, and has a third outlet through a small orifice covered by a self-sealing septum. Injection of samples is done by inserting the hypodermic syringe containing the sample through this septum so that the point of the needle is immediately above the head of the column. Design of the injection port must be such that it can be maintained at a uniform temperature and will possess a very small dead volume.

Pour assurer la vaporisation instantanée de l'échantillon, l'injecteur est habituellement maintenu à une température au moins 30 °C plus élevée que celle du four contenant la colonne.

In orifice-type scrubbers(Figure 15), particle-liquid contact is obtained through the effects of the carrier gas velocity and, therefore, performance depends on the flow rate of the gas. Both efficiency and pressure drop vary with carrier gas flow rate, with the normal pressure drop ranging from 2-6 in. of water.
