The oxygen [is] forced to the bottom of the tank through a PVC [polyvinyl chloride] pipe... Once the air is expelled it... mixes with the iron and manganese for proper oxidation. The extruded polyethylene(also sometimes called yellow jacket) coating is common and is much less expensive, although also less reliable.

This fibre optic viewing head extension is particularly useful for solving the sighting problems associated with tilting or movable burners. The flame envelope from this type of burner can be tilted from a horizontal position up or down as much as 30 degrees. It would be impossible to follow this flame pattern with a fixed sighting through the wind-box. Welding the tip guide (lens end) of this viewing head extension to the movable air compartment nozzle solves this problem. This viewing head extension can also be used for those applications where it is impossible to find a clear unobstructed view of the flame using a standard sight pipe. Here again the viewing head extension is mounted inside the furnace for a clear unobstructed view of the flame.

High-Consistency System. Figure 11-18 shows a representative system where pulp is handled in the 25% to 28% consistency range. Typically, a press is used to raise the feed consistency to about 30%. Fresh caustic or oxidized white liquor along with the magnesium protector is added to the pulp at the discharge of the press. A thick stock pump then transfers the pulp to a fluffer via a feed pipe in which a gas-tight plug is formed. The fluffed pulp flows down the pressurized reactor as a loose bed, while gaseous oxygen is continuously dissolved into the liquid phase and reacted with the pulp.... Oxygen gas is added to either top or bottom to maintain a partial pressure within the 90 to 130 psi range. Relief is taken from the head space at the top of the tower to remove combustibles and other noncondensible gases, and control overall reactor pressure. At the bottom of the tower, the reacted pulp is diluted with post-oxygen filtrate and pumped at about 6% consistency to a blow tank.

With conventional gas furnaces, little can be done to prevent losses of heated house air up the chimney when the furnace is firing. What can be prevented, though, is the loss that occurs when the furnace is not firing. A positive vent damper consists of a tight-fitting hinged damper door mounted in a steel collar and fitted into the flue pipe just before the pipe enters the chimney base. Burner Efficiency Tests and Adjustments... A smoke spot tester is used to measure the soot content of flues gases. The serviceman will adjust the air intake band on the burner until a visually smokeless flame is produced in the combustion chamber. The probe of the smoke testing apparatus is inserted through the hole in the flue pipe and a flue gas sample is drawn through a piece of filter paper. The resulting soot mark on the paper is compared in intensity to a standard chart. The chart shows measurements labelled 0 to 9 and most residential oil furnaces can burn cleanly enough for a 0 to 1 rating... a number 2 smoke is ideal.
