DEF

The result of hitting the tennis ball with a tennis racquet; sometimes refers to the actual placement of the ball or manner in which it is struck.

CONT

A shot is the combination of a stroke and the situation in which it is used.

OBS

"Long" is an informal expression used to indicate that a shot went out past the baseline. Important nuance: a "stroke" implies early preparation and a complete follow through. If one were to envision a stroke, one would see a series of sequences, ending with a "shot", i.e. the result of all of the above. Consequently, a "shot" is the result of the "stroke". "Shot" implies a quick, sharp movement because one is focusing on the end result, not the series of sequences leading up to it. A "blow" is rather an imprecise, general term similar in meaning to "shot". Although many would like to maintain these nuances in English, "shot" and "stroke" are often used synonymously. "Blow" is used only rarely. Note, however that although there are two possible equivalents ("coup" and "frappe") in French, neither are semantically identical to the English offerings. The Spanish term "pegada" works well as an equivalent for "shot", although technically the term more specifically refers to the actual hitting action caused by the racket coming in contact with the ball, and not to the end result [cause vs effect].

CONT

In order to avoid creating an unsafe condition, when the signal is taken "Off" for an approaching train and crank handle is also available for the operation of the points, it is necessary that the crank handle be kept in safe custody. The experience has shown that the better arrangement is to lock the crank handle by an electric lock whenever the concerned signal is taken Off so that it is not possible for anybody to use the crank handle for operation of the points. Alternatively, if crank handle is out, the signal should not be allowed to go to Off position. The phenomenon is called "reciprocal interlocking" and it is achieved by providing reciprocal interlocking arrangement by means of circuitry and the electric lock fixed on the crank handle. In all modern signalling installations this feature is a must in order to achieve safe train operation.

CONT

[Fork Truck Construction.] An important operational aspect of mast assemblies is freelift. Freelift is defined as the vertical distance forks can raise above the floor before the mast begins to extend from its collapsed height.

CONT

[Lift trucks. ] "Free lift" is the amount of movement the carriage can make before the cylinder yoke starts lifting the mast. A standard upright usually has just enough free lift to raise the load off the floor so the truck can go through a doorway without the top of the mast striking the door.

OBS

The amount of freelift available is dependent on the mast and truck design. Freelift may range from only a few inches on some models to over 60 in. (1500 mm) on the man-up turret truck. Most manufacturers offer trucks with either standard or "high" freelift available.

Sunrise simulator... slowly lights a bedside lamp to simulate dawn. This simulates sunrise and tells your brain that it is time to get up and start the day. Instructions are included. At the time you select, your lamp will slowly go from off to full on.

CONT

Research has shown that using a dawn simulator (or Bodyclock) can significantly reduce the severity of SAD [seasonal affective disorder] symptoms, and many SAD sufferers use both a Bodyclock and a lightbox to optimise their treatment. It has also been shown that using a Bodyclock improves mood, energy, productivity and quality of sleep and awakening.

OBS

Bodyclocks work by waking you up naturally with light. You choose the time you want to wake up and the light very slowly begins to get brighter (like a sunrise) and starts your body’s natural wake-up process. Although you’re still asleep, your body is responding to the increasing light and when the light reaches full brightness you wake up naturally, not suddenly, to a room filled with a sunny glow. By giving your body a kind of "head-start," instead of still feeling drowsy and confused when you wake up, you feel refreshed, positive and ready for the day ahead.

The third approach, lunar orbit rendezvous, was proposed after the first two and became the best practical approach to meet all the requirements. The approach and its challenges can be described in a single long sentence : Take off from Earth, which is rotating approximately 1, 000 mph, orbit the Earth at 18, 000 mph, accelerate to 25, 000 mph to break out of Earth's orbit toward the moon 250, 000 miles away and, traveling 2, 000 mph relative to the Earth, go into lunar orbit, send a manned spacecraft to land on the moon to explore and leave scientific instruments before returning to lunar orbit, rendezvous with the rest of the spacecraft, and then blast out of lunar orbit back to Earth.

DEF

Progressive transfer of kinetic energy from systems of larger scale to those of smaller scale, ending in its dissipation by friction.

CONT

... many weather phenomena occur on the ’mesoscale’... Mesoscale is believed to play an important role in transferring energy from the large scale down to the small scales.... Energy Cascade. As we go down scales, we see finer and finer structures. Many of these structures are due to certain types of instabilities that inherently limit the size and duration of the phenomena. Also, there exist exchanges of energy, heat, moisture and momentum among all scales. Example : A thunderstorm feeds off convective instabilities... created by e. g., synoptic-scale cyclones.... The thunderstorm in turn can produce tornadoes... Strong winds in the tornado creates turbulent eddies which then dissipate and eventually turn the kinetic energy into heat. Convective activities can also feed back into the large scale and enhancing synoptic scale cyclones. Most of the energy transfer in the atmosphere is downscale-starting from differential heating with latitude and land-sea contrast on the planetary scales.(Energy in the atmosphere can also transfer upscale). We call the energy transfer among scales energy cascade.

Subject field(s)
  • Anti-pollution Measures
DEF

The reduction in degree or intensity of pollution.

DEF

A lessening of the daily load of air, water and soil pollution created by industrial and domestic man.

CONT

In English, the word abate may mean to diminish, or it may also mean to put an end to a process or practice. With respect to pollution and polluters, abatement regrettably does not mean to put an end to it or to them. Instead it means the method or attempt to diminish the degree of pollution causing the immediate urgency. Thus, when faced with a subsidence inversion and concomitant smog, a mayor of a megalopolis considers closing off certain heavily travelled streets to vehicular traffic. This would cause abatement of a temporary nature in that particular area. When a Maryland community passes an ordinance banning one-way bottles from supermarket shelves, this also could cause an abatement of a temporary nature-provided citizens did not go out of the area and bring in bootleg one-way bottles. Abatement, although desirable, is never the answer to a dangerous situation.

OBS

abatement of pollution: term found in the Canadian Environmental Protection Act (1999).

Français

Domaine(s)

CONT

CONT

Wharton is a powerful symbol of where our country went wrong in the 1980s. It was here at Wharton that Michael Milken got the idea to use junk bonds to leverage corporate buyouts--a quick-buck scheme that was supposed to shake up failed management but too often forced corporations to lay off workers in formerly profitable plants, reduce R&D, and ultimately to go bankrupt or sell out again under the crushing burden of unserviceable debt.

CONT

Even the stronger enterprises were not immune from the problem of unserviceable debt as the state had in the past arbitrarily absorbed their profits and forced them to build up a large stock of debt.

CONT

Total Third World debt is in the hundreds of billions, piled up under the auspices of the World Bank and sister agencies when they were attempting to impose their brand of global statism on any country desperate or corrupt enough to accept the money. The majority of these loans are unlikely to be repaid, especially those to the poorest nations. This creates a problem for the people who run the World Bank, a band of bureaucrats who for years claimed that their lending practices were sound and that their loan default rates were low. What the loans did, aside from provide tax-free employment opportunities for thousands of World Bank credit officers, was create scores of nations with large, unserviceable debt burdens.

OBS

It [blocking pattern] persists from one to several weeks.... there are three kinds of blocks :... a high-over-low block in which the flow splits, one branch taking a poleward excursion and the other branch an equatorward excursion. Any traveling storms that approach the block from the west, tend to weaken and go either over the ridge(top of the block) or pass through the trough on the south side.... An "omega" block so named because the flow about this block resembles the Greek letter "Omega". Cyclonic(counterclockwise) circulations can occur both southwest and southeast of the block(where low pressure is indicated on the diagram), and the weather near them can be stormy. Within the block, however, the weather is benign and warmer than normal.... A stationary high-amplitude ridge. Such a ridge often forms just off the West Coast of North America in winter. If it persists, it steers Pacific storms far to the north and keeps the weather in British Columbia and the Pacific Northwest anomalously dry and mild.

What you need in order to access on-line music distribution services : To get to the Internet Underground Music Archive(IUMA) RockNet, Kaleidospace and metaverse. com, you’ll be best off with full Internet access, and a sound card that gives your computer audio-capability, unless you own a Macintosh, which already has sound capacity built in. If you have full Internet access, connect to the World Wide Web(WWW). The quickest way to each service is to use your favorite WWW browser. With the more-powerful Mosaic browser, you can listen to the music on-line, but you need a very powerful computer. Point you browser at the following Universal Resource Locators(URL) : IUMA, RockNet, Kaleisdospace, metaverse. com. The home page of each site usually has a how-to guide. If your system doesn’t allow WWW access, but lets you use gopher(like Concordia University's Pavo system), go to your main command prompt, and type in gopher URI. for site. Once at the site, you will have to download the sound files to your Internet system, or directly to your PC(assuming you use a terminal server.)

OBS

Yet there are limits to the technology as it now exists. Even with a high-speed modem and the necessary sound card, a three- or four-minute song can take anywhere from 10 minutes to several hours to download. It can also use up a large amount of computer storage space.

Doctors in community health centres prescribe heroin, for example, to users to enable them to stay on heroin(thereby preventing withdrawal symptoms) and to get safe heroin. Advantages of these programs : keep users off the streets, maintains contact with physicians, less risk of HIV, make support available when users are ready to go off drug, undercut underground drug trade, reduce crime related to drug trade. The methadone maintenance programs are another example of harm reduction programs. They eliminate the need for needles because methadone is taken by mouth. These programs were pioneered in the city of Merseyside, England, and have been adopted in various European cities, but not yet in Canada. They have been in existence for more than 20 years.
