GO RECORD AS [6 fiches]

Fiche 1 2020-05-01

Anglais

Subject field(s)
  • Environmental Studies and Analyses
  • Bird Watching (Hobbies)
CONT

Incidental observations are casual wildlife sightings that happen when you’re outside – hiking, camping, swimming, driving, etc. Spotting a species in the "right place at the right time" can have a far-reaching effect. Knowing what species are present in different locations helps identify areas that are important (e.g. breeding sites, hibernation sites, migration routes, etc.), which also helps to improve conservation efforts.

CONT

Chance observations provided the earliest data on raptor diet, and are still recorded today. These are the events all naturalists happen to see, such as a flying buzzard with an especially long snake dangling limply below it... There was no forethought to go and record what buzzards were eating, but having seen something exciting the observer may want to record it in a local bird report or online. Why should a modern scientist bother with such unsystematic data when trying to make an assessment of buzzard diet?... while such chance observations can’t be used on their own to understand common buzzard behaviour, they do supplement the more rigorous data collection and help to complete the picture of diet diversity.

CONT

  • Seismic Prospecting
DEF

The member of a seismograph crew who attends to the placement of the geophones.

CONT

Seismic Line Crew Helper. As a Line Crew Helper, Andre lays out and picks up seismic recording equipment for 2D and 3D land seismic data acquisition.

CONT

... the [seismic exploration] industry needs chainsaw buckers to help clear a path in forested areas, survey helpers to mark where the explosives and vibrators need to go, driller helpers to handle the explosives and help drill the shot hole for the explosives, and line crew helpers to lay the cable and sensors that will record the data.... With as many as fifty line crew helpers needed on a crew, these juggies are the muscle on the team. Line crew helpers are often called recorder helpers because much of their work involves laying the electronic equipment and wires that record sounds coming from underground.

CONT

Helpers are inexperienced people in training positions on seismic crews. After they gain skills and experience, helpers may move to other positions on a crew. Recording helpers, often called jug hustlers, assist seismic observers. In preparation for recording activities, observers may require as many as twenty or more helpers to haul cables, geophones and other recording equipment, and place and connect recording equipment.

CONT

A Line Crew/Recorder Helper/ is responsible for the laying out and picking up of seismic recording equipment for the purposes of both 2D and 3D land seismic data acquisition. In preparation for recording activities, there may be as many as fifty or more helpers to lay out cables and plant geophones. The position involves working twelve to fourteen hours per day, walking six to 20 km on uneven terrain, carrying cables and geophones for pick-up or layout (up to 90lbs) ensuring quality control on lay-out and pick-up, participating actively in all company safety initiatives, following all helicopter safety protocol, and loading and unloading of seismic equipment from seismic line vehicles or helibags.

OBS

jug hustler; juggy: slang terms. The term «jug» is a synonym of «geophone».

DEF

A record system based upon the Torrens system of registration in Australia, which provides protection for a bona fide purchaser from a "registered" owner to the extent that the purchaser does not have to go behind the register and search the vendor's title in order to satisfy himself as to its validity. When land is transferred under the system, the transferee becomes the registered owner and earlier links in the chain of title are immaterial.(Yogis, 1983, p. 181).

DEF

The loss of a match.

OBS

All of these verbs not only are more or less of the same meaning in the world of tennis, they are all transitive verbs. For intransitive verbs, see "win". In Spanish, the generic verb "superar" can often mean "to beat", "to defeat", as well as "to surpass", "to go beyond", "to get through" and "to overcome"(el tenista superó(batió) el récord mundial). Nonetheless it is always used transitively. The Spanish verb "ganar", unlike its intransitive equivalent in English(i. e. win) can become an indirect transitive verb and in so doing takes on the additional meaning of defeating or beating. To rout is to defeat decisively.
