CONT

... why use a sinking line? Trout follow their food up and down the water column, and the depth at which aquatic life forms are found changes according to the time of day, light levels and seasonality.... Sinking lines enable the angler to present a fly or lure at exactly the right depth and speed to capitalise on [the] larder.... sinking lines can go down like a stone, remain just subsurface or be fished at all points in between. Armed with two or three lines of different densities, the angler can stay in contact with feeding trout wherever they happen to be.

Anglais

Subject field(s)
  • Racquet Sports
DEF

The result of hitting the tennis ball with a tennis racquet; sometimes refers to the actual placement of the ball or manner in which it is struck.

CONT

A shot is the combination of a stroke and the situation in which it is used.

OBS

"Long" is an informal expression used to indicate that a shot went out past the baseline. Important nuance: a "stroke" implies early preparation and a complete follow through. If one were to envision a stroke, one would see a series of sequences, ending with a "shot", i.e. the result of all of the above. Consequently, a "shot" is the result of the "stroke". "Shot" implies a quick, sharp movement because one is focusing on the end result, not the series of sequences leading up to it. A "blow" is rather an imprecise, general term similar in meaning to "shot". Although many would like to maintain these nuances in English, "shot" and "stroke" are often used synonymously. "Blow" is used only rarely. Note, however that although there are two possible equivalents ("coup" and "frappe") in French, neither are semantically identical to the English offerings. The Spanish term "pegada" works well as an equivalent for "shot", although technically the term more specifically refers to the actual hitting action caused by the racket coming in contact with the ball, and not to the end result [cause vs effect].

  • Underground Planning (Urban Studies)
CONT

Safety is to be improved at the Homer Tunnel ... . There is only enough room for one bus at a time, the tunnel is not lit and there is no emergency phone within the tunnel itself. Sunday’s fire, although an unusual incident, is now raising wider issues for Transit including whether to make the tunnel two way. But tour operators say traffic flow was not to blame. David Kennedy of Destination Queenstown says: "The issue was a bizarre freak incident. A bus caught fire in the tunnel and whether it was a one way tunnel or two way tunnel would have been irrelevant, I think."

CONT

Much like the Alaska Marine Highway System, a staging area will be used at both ends of the tunnel for vehicles to line up for the next change of direction of travel. Since this is a one way tunnel, vehicles will have to wait their turn to go through the tunnel. In general, only a 15 minute period will be used for cars in one direction and then the direction of travel will be reversed.
