Le GAIM est un projet principal du PIGB dont l'objectif est de favoriser le développement de modèles détaillés de prévision du système biogéochimique global et de coupler ces modèles avec ceux du système climatique physique. Les activités du GAIM recoupent celles des autres projets du PIGB puisqu'elles sont étroitement liées à ces derniers.
