The goal of Indian Government Support programming is to provide bands with assistance for the establishment and maintenance of effective local governance and administrative systems and the provision of programs and services to their members. Indian Government Support is provided for a variety of functions, including : pension and benefit regimes for eligible band employees; capacity development and training; and, where feasible and desirable, the regional administration of programs and services through tribal councils. The Indian Government Support Programs include : Band Support Funding, Band Employee Benefits, Tribal Council Funding, Band Advisory Services, and Professional and Institutional Development.

Les programmes de Soutien aux gouvernements indiens ont été établis dans le début des années 80 pour aider les Affaires indiennes et du Nord Canada à fournir du soutien aux gouvernements des Premières nations. Les cinq programmes de Soutien aux gouvernements indiens sont distincts mais apparentés. Ils contribuent à payer les coûts permanents de leurs gouvernements et institutions et à renforcer leurs capacités. Les programmes de Soutien aux gouvernements indiens incluent: le Programme de financement de soutien des bandes, le Programme des avantages sociaux des employés des bandes, le Programme de financement des conseils tribaux, le Programme de services consultatifs des bandes et le Programme de développement professionnel et institutionnel. Le renouvellement des autorités de programmes est en cours pour 2010-11.

In 1993, under further restructuring of the United Nations, this became the Department for Development Support and Management Services(DDSMS). DDSMS provided technical and managerial support and advisory services to member states of the UN, relevant research, and parliamentary services to expert groups and intergovernmental bodies. It had a twofold mandate :(i) to act as an executing agency for programs and projects relating to institution-building and human resource development in areas such as development policies and planning, natural resources and energy planning, governance and public management, and financial management and accounting;(ii) to act as a focal point for the provision of management services and implementation functions for technical cooperation. In 1997 DDSMS was merged with the Department for Policy Coordination and Sustainable Development and the Department for Economic and Social Information and Policy Analysis to form the Department of Economic and Social Affairs(DESA).
