The Constitution sets out the basic principles of democratic government in Canada when it defines the powers of the three branches of government : the executive, the legislative and the judicial. The executive power in Canada is vested in the Queen. In our democratic society, this is only a constitutional convention, as the real executive power rests with the Cabinet. The Cabinet, at the federal level, consists of the Prime Minister and Ministers who are answerable to Parliament for government activities. As well, Ministers are responsible for government departments, such as the Department of Finance and the Department of Justice. When we say “the government” in a general way, we are usually referring to the executive.

In 1930, the Saskatchewan Treaty Protection Association was formed to protect the Treaty Rights of Indians in the Fort Qu'Appelle area. During the 1940's it became the Protective Association for Indians and their Treaties. In 1943, the Association of Indians of Saskatchewan became the largest organization in Saskatchewan. In 1946, a conference was convened by the Government of Saskatchewan at which 60 representatives of the Cree, Sioux, Saulteaux and Assiniboine Tribes of Saskatchewan discussed the feasibility of forming a single Indian organization. A resolution was passed favouring such establishment. Follow up meetings of Saskatchewan Indian leaders representing all Saskatchewan Bands were held at Duck Lake and Saskatoon. This resulted in the formation of the Union of Saskatchewan Indians. In 1957, a conference of Saskatchewan Chiefs and Councillors laid plans for a new organization. A second conference in 1958 resulted in the Federation of Saskatchewan Indians. By the late 1970's the swift pace of the political developments of the Federation of Saskatchewan Indians(FSI) led to the drive for reorganization of the structure and Constitution of the Federation. On April 16, 1982, the Saskatchewan Chiefs agreed to form Canada's first Indian Legislative Assembly. The political convention they signed re-structured the FSI, so that the provincial governing body is no longer a non-profit society but a true federation of nations. Now known as the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations, the Chiefs control the executive and administrative functions of government at the band, tribal council and provincial levels of Indian Government.

Terrasses de la Chaudière is a complex of government office buildings in Gatineau, Quebec, Canada. The complex was built in 1978 as part of Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau's initiative to see more federal workers based in the Quebec side of the Ottawa River. It was built by developer Robert Campeau and then leased to the government. The complex was named after the nearby Chaudière Falls in the Ottawa River. Today its three towers hold some 6, 500 federal government office workers and houses Department of the Environment, the Department of Indian and Northern Affairs, the Department of Canadian Heritage, the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission(CRTC), and several other government entities. The centre also holds a shopping complex, a hotel, and a convention centre. The Central tower of the complex is the tallest in the National Capital Region, at 30 storeys and 124 meters high.

It was transferred, along with other children’s social policy initiatives, to Human Resources Development Canada in the mid-1990’s when it was created. The WAF has been developed by signatories to the London Convention, 1972, including Canada. It has two main features. First, it places new emphasis on progressively reducing the need to use oceans for waste disposal. This is consistent with the principle of pollution prevention and the goal of waste reduction advanced by the Government of Canada and in Agenda 21 of the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development. The functions of a diplomatic mission consist inter alia in :(a) representing the sending State in the receiving State;(b) protecting in the receiving State the interests of the sending State and of its nationals, within the limits permitted by international law;(c) negotiating with the Government of the receiving State;(d) ascertaining by all lawful means conditions and developments in the receiving State, and reporting thereon to the Government of the sending State;(e) promoting friendly relations between the sending State and the receiving State, and developing their economic, cultural and scientific relations. Nothing in the present Convention shall be construed as preventing the performance of consular functions by a diplomatic mission.
