A territory that entered the Canadian Confederation in 1898 as the "Yukon Territory", out of the District of Yukon created in 1895 in the Northwest Territories. Until 1999, the Yukon used to stand eleventh in the order of precedence established according to the year of entry into Confederation of the ten provinces, then of the territories, listed, by convention, before the Northwest Territories even if the latter entered Confederation 28 years before. It now stands twelfth, after the Northwest Territories and before Nunavut. On March 27, 2002, the name was changed to "Yukon" even if the status of territory remains.

The name of a territory and its form, spelling and abbreviation are to be decided by the provincial toponymy authority, with the agreement of the Government of Canada. One uses "Yukon"(or "territory of Yukon") for the geographical entity, "Yukon" for the provincial administration or as the short form, and "Yk. "as the abbreviation to be officially recognized by the toponymic authority, a change from the previous "Y. T. ".

Approved by ISO, the Canada Post two-character symbol is YT (or CA-YT), [to be changed to YK (or CA-YK) if a request to that extent is made and accepted]. This symbol is the same in all languages and must be used only in postal addresses and statistical charts where the identification of provinces and territories is restricted to two characters. A two-character territorial symbol must not be used instead of the abbreviation in a text or on a geographical map, a poster or a road sign.

The use of the definite article in English before "Yukon" is dependent upon how it is used in the context. If "Yukon" modifies another term, then the article is omitted. e.g. Yukon Indians comprise 25% of the population of the territory. If "Yukon" takes the inflected genitive (’s) , then the use of the article is optional. e.g. (the) Yukon’s wildlife resources; (the) Yukon’s native people. In every other case, the use of the definite article would be in keeping with common usage as it signals the absence of a generic geographic feature. Hence we say "the Mediterranean" (implied: Sea), "the Philippines" (implied: "Islands"). Currently, there is some debate as to the appropriateness of the definite article, all the more since "the Yukon" (implied: "territory") is seeking political parity with the other established "provinces" (statement of 1991). [Usage can thus tend to drop the article as is the case before the name of a province.]

An airport located in Dorval, now a part of the city of Montréal, and used for private, local, national and international flights. The airport was first the "Dorval Airport," from the name of the city in the suburbs of Montréal, then the "Dorval International Airport," to become the airport for domestic flights, that is the flights limited to Canada, with the construction of the "Mirabel International Airport" inaugurated in 1975 and intended for international flights. But inadequate terrestrial links between Montréal and Mirabel contributed to give to the Montréal Dorval Airport ("Montréal-Dorval") its international status, leaving the charter (up to Autumn 2004) and cargo flights to the Mirabel Airport ("Montréal-Mirabel"); political decisions for these ends were accompanied by important subsidies for the building of added accommodations to what has become the "Montréal Dorval International Airport." With the amalgamation or merging of all the cities on the Île de Montréal, including the former cities of Montréal and of Dorval, to form the new city of Montréal on the 1 January 2002, the airport became the "Montréal Airport," a reality usage had already confirmed. On the 1 January 2004, the airport’s name changed to "Montréal Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport" to honour a former Prime Minister of Canada as do other important airports in the country. The official name will, no doubt, not be quoted at length all the time; the forms mentioned as correct on the present record will surely be used instead, including the recommendation of the airport authority as to the use of "Montréal-Trudeau" as the current short form ("fly from Montréal-Trudeau", or "land at the Montréal-Trudeau Airport"). Even if the airport encountered many name and status changes, it never had a name that includes a comma, and had always been represented by YUL, its IATA three-letter code.

The Montréal Dorval International Airport has been officially renamed "Montréal Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport," written "Montréal - Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport" (a dash with a space before and after) in some governmental documents, during a ceremony held on September 9, 2003.
