During the watershed years of the 1960s, the country was ripe for serious reflection. In 1963, the federal government created the Royal Commission on Bilingualism and Biculturalism(the Laurendeau-Dunton Commission), which spent seven years taking an X-ray of Canadian society. Its first finding was that the country was in the "central crisis of its history" and that, to resolve this, it would have to grant everyone the right to an education in his or her own official language; make the federal public service bilingual, and recognize the distinctive character of Quebec. Quebec was beginning to demand greater recognition of its majority language and culture.

Au tournant des années 60, le pays était mûr pour une profonde réflexion. Le gouvernement fédéral a créé la Commission royale d'enquête sur le bilinguisme et le biculturalisme en 1963 (Commission Laurendeau-Dunton). Celle-ci passera sept ans à faire une véritable radiographie de la société canadienne. Elle a d'abord constaté que le pays traversait «la crise majeure de son histoire». Il fallait pour la résoudre, donner à chacun le droit à l'éducation dans sa langue, rendre la fonction publique fédérale bilingue et reconnaître que le Québec avait son caractère propre. Le Québec commençait par ailleurs à exiger une meilleure reconnaissance de sa langue et sa culture majoritaires.

The effect of a government subsidy is to lower the final price of a product or service, which is why subsidies can become an international trade issue. The most common examples are direct payments by government to industry to help finance a large-scale project such as a major oil project, to help fund the costs of developing a new technology, to investigate foreign markets, or to locate an activity in a slow-growth region of the country. Subsidies can consist of grants, low-interest loans, or tax incentives.

Their work is based on understanding : The behavior and analogues for inorganic elements, and; How these materials can be modified, separated, and used. Specific work may include : Developing methods to recover metals from waste streams; Working as an analytical chemist in the analysis of mined ores; Performing research on the use of inorganic chemicals for treating soil. Many inorganic chemists work in industry, but they also work in academic institutions and government labs. Inorganic chemists who work in government say their time is increasingly spent writing grant proposals and competing for research money.

The New Rural Economy Project Phase 2(NRE2) is a research and education program studying rural Canada since 1998. It is a collaborative undertaking bringing together rural people, researchers, policy-analysts, the business community, and government agencies at all levels to identify and address vital rural issues. It is conducted at the national level with historical and statistical data analysis, and at the local level with case studies involving community and household surveys. The NRE's mandate has been extended through 2006 with the help of a major grant from the INITIATIVE ON THE NEW ECONOMY Program(INE) of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada.

The Canada Education Savings Grant(CESG) is a grant from the Government of Canada paid directly into a beneficiary's Registered Education Savings Plan(RESP). It adds 20 percent to the first $2, 000 in contributions made into an RESP on behalf of an eligible beneficiary each year. This means the Grant can be as much as $400 each year per beneficiary and over the years could amount to a total of $7, 200. Together with the accumulating investment income, the Canada Education Savings Grant will be available to be paid to a student as part of the Educational Assistance Payment.

Indian and Northern Affairs Canada. Band Support Funding(BSF) is one component of First Nation Indian Government Support Funding programs. The BSF was established in 1982, as a formula based contribution program and was designed to assist First Nations meet the costs of local government and the administration of departmentally funded services. Since 1985, the BSF operates under broad authorities provided by Indian and Northern Affairs Canada(INAC) in the form of a grant, and derives its legislative authorities from Annual Parliamentary appropriations and Treasury Board authorities.

The Government of Canada established, in the 1970's, direct assistance programs such as the Block Grant Program at the Canada Council and the Book Publishing Industry Development Program at the Department of Canadian Heritage. Since 1995, the Government of Canada has provided Canada Study Grants-formerly Special Opportunity Grants-to provide assistance to students with permanent disabilities, high-need part-time students, and women in certain doctoral studies. In 1998, the government introduced a new Canada Study Grant to help full-and part-time student loan recipients with dependants finance their education.
