The first Representative Assembly of the Colony of Newfoundland was elected in 1833 and named the House of Assembly. This name continued to be used for the elected Chamber when the Colony was granted Responsible Government in 1855. In February, 1934 the Constitution of the Dominion of Newfoundland was suspended. At the time of suspension there were two Houses of Parliament namely : the Legislative Counsel, the Upper House and the House of Assembly, the Lower elected House. When Newfoundland joined Canada in 1949, the Terms of Union as set forth in the British North American Act of 1949(now cited the Newfoundland Act) provided that the Constitution of the Legislature of Newfoundland as it existed immediately prior to February of 1934 would continue as the Constitution and the Legislature of the Province from the date of union. Although the Legislative Counsel was not continued at the time of Confederation, the Lower House or the House of Assembly became the elected Parliament of the Province and the name House Assembly continued to be used after 1949 in the same manner as it was originally used in 1833. Therefore, the Parliament of Newfoundland and Labrador is referred to as the House of Assembly and not the Legislative Assembly of the Province.

Le Secrétariat de la législation et de la planification parlementaire seconde le Premier ministre en assurant la coordination et la gestion du programme législatif du gouvernement. À cette fin, le secrétariat collabore étroitement avec le leader du gouvernement à la Chambre des communes et ministre de la réforme démocratique et le leader du gouvernement au Sénat. Le travail du secrétariat consiste notamment à : préparer et gérer le programme législatif au Parlement (tant à la Chambre des communes qu'au Sénat); fournir des conseils sur les pratiques, les procédures et les questions parlementaires; coordonner les réponses du gouvernement aux questions parlementaires écrites, aux avis de motion (demandes de documents) et aux pétitions (documents parlementaires); élaborer des politiques et des dispositions législatives touchant la réforme démocratique et électorale.

The Justice Annex is a building just north of the Supreme Court of Canada and west of Parliament Hill in Ottawa, Canada. Built in 1940 it is the last surviving representative of many similar temporary buildings erected during the Second World War to house the rapidly growing number of government employees. This building was built to house Royal Canadian Mounted Police(RCMP) officers. It later became the headquarters of C. D. Howe's Department of Munitions and Supply. After the war it was given to the Justice Department and named the Justice Annex.

In June 1995, the House passed a motion to establish a Special Joint Committee of the House and Senate to develop a Code of Conduct. The following month, the Senate passed a similar motion. More than 19 months later, the Committee presented to Parliament its proposed Code of Official Conduct. The Committee emphasized the following as important goals for the Code : the maintenance of public trust and confidence in Parliament, and the provision of guidance for Parliamentarians in how to reconcile their private interests with their public duties. Specific rules were proposed for Parliamentarians which would have prohibited them from furthering their own private interests or those of their families, and from using insider information; the rules would also have regulated the receipt of gifts and personal benefits, sponsored travel and contracting with the government.
