The number and position of knots as well as the colour of each cord represented information about commercial goods and resources. Quipu means knot in Quechua, the native language of the Andes. With my approval and full support, the process to implement the department's Health and Safety Strategic Plan 2001 has begun. This plan not only provides Public Works and Government Services Canada(PWGSC) with the ability to meet all current health and safety requirements, but offers a proactive approach to health and safety issues in the workplace. This major departmental initiative was introduced by the National Health and Safety Committee. Key to its successful implementation is the active participation of the department's Regional/Area Health and Safety Committees, and Workplace Health and Safety Committees and Representatives. To simplify the way business complies with Ontario government regulations, a "Clearing the Path" project was initiated to help businesses. The project offers entrepreneurs an easy-to-use computerized registration system to prepare, transmit and comply with government. Clearing the Path collects essential business information only once. It then sends out to each program area what is needed for processing and approval.
