It began in 1935, when the mandate of the ministère des Affaires municipales was broadened to include industry and trade, two sectors of increasing importance to the government. On April 29, 2003, the Premier announced the creation of the ministère du Développement économique et régional(MDER) out of these four entities. In April 2004, "Recherche" was added to the MDER's name. In New Brunswick and in British Columbia the federal government is funding the Self-Sufficiency Project, a controlled experiment designed to determine the effectiveness of an earnings supplement for single-parent social assistance recipients who take jobs and agree to leave social assistance.
