A veering wind is a wind that turns clockwise with height. An example of a veering wind would be a southeast wind at the surface and a west wind at 700 millibars. The wind turns in the same direction as a clock from the surface to 700 millibars. A veering wind is associated with warm air advection and dynamic lifting... The magnitude of warm air advection is a function of wind speed and the pre-existing thermal gradient. Weak winds will result in weak advection. Winds often veer ahead of cold fronts(in the warm sector of a mid-latitude cyclone).

A zone of minimum sound speed in the oceans that occurs at depths of approximately 1,000 metres (3,300 feet).

Between the negative gradient of the main thermocline and the positive gradient of the deep layer there is a sound speed minimum, where sound tends to be focused by refraction. The depth at which this focusing occurs is known as the deep sound channel(DSC).

Lapse Temperature Gradient. This condition normally exists on a clear day when the middle and low clouds cover less than 30 percent of the sky and when the wind speed is less than 5 km/h. It is the least favorable condition for the enemy to employ chemical or biological agents. When a lapse condition exists, area coverage without diffusion will be enhanced with a steady low wind speed of 3 to 7 km/h.

In common usage, the term "temperature gradient" is reserved for temperature change with horizontal distance and "temperature lapse rate" for change of temperature with height.

The term "lapse" may also signify, as in "humidity lapse rate", the rate of decrease with height of certain meteorological variables other than temperature.

In vitro freezing of tissue. Early attempts at studying the effects of speed and final temperature of freezing of tissue slices on cellular damage had difficulty in separating these parameters. Rubinsky and co-workers developed a method of controlled freezing of tissue slices on a microscope slide moving along a temperature gradient between two constant temperature bases. They were able to freeze animal and human liver tissue with a constant cooling rate. Their experiments revealed that high cooling rates will result in intracellular ice formation and probably immediate cell death, representing the clinical situation very close to the cryoprobe. Lower cooling rates resulting in cellular dehydration and extracellular ice formation with large ice crystals propagating along the sinusoids, expanding them by a factor of two in diameter.

African Waves. A prominent meteorological phenomena wherein waves originate over central and western Africa and propagate westward into the eastern Atlantic Ocean.

African Waves... have wavelengths of around 2500 km, periods of about 3. 5 days and move with a westward speed of around 8 m/s. Their genesis begins with strong surface heating over the Sahara during the northern summer combining with cooling of the sea water over the Gulf of Guineau to the south to establish a north-south temperature gradient over central and western Africa.

The wave disturbances drawing energy from this [African] jet propagate westward to the Atlantic Ocean. They are also known as African waves. Some of them under favorable conditions become hurricanes that reach North America.
