The unloading process commences when cars are spotted on tracks leading to a terminal' s trackshed.... The car is spotted over the unload position in the trackshed by a winch(cable carhaul), or by a shunt engine. It is then unloaded. The grain flows into the unloading pit where it remains until communication is received from the scale floor to indicate that the appropriate garner is empty. Communication between trackshed and scale floor can be carried out in a number of ways including a simple voice tube, telephone system or signal light system. While grain is moving through the system, an extensive sanitation program ensures that quality is maintained. For example, many elements in the Commission's quality control efforts ensure that grain shipped is free of pesticide residues. It is illegal for a producer to deliver contaminated grain to a licensed elevator. If an inspector at the terminal discovers evidence of chemical contamination in a car being unloaded, he immediately orders the grain segregated. The grain is tested by the Research Laboratory and the owner of the grain is advised of requirements for disposal. The balloon annex usually has a capacity of about 680 tonnes. Built beside the elevator, it is usually 8. 2 metres wide, 18. 3 metres long, 6. 1 metres high and has one partition in the middle which creates two large bins. It is filled by lifting grain within the elevator itself from the pit to the distributor spout and then directing the grain through an added spout to the annex.
