[When the wheat arrives at the receiving and storage part of the mill, a] rough cleaning... is done with a sieving machine called a receiving separator... This separator removes sticks, straw, large stones, pieces of paper and other material larger than wheat and also sieves out sand and seeds smaller than wheat by means of inclined oscillating sieves. La machine s'appelle alors «milling separator». The general practice in Canada is to use only one cleaning passage for the blend. The first cleaning machine is a milling separator, similar to the receiving separator used in the elevator, but more precise in its ability to separate impurities that are larger and smaller than wheat. The top sieve has large perforations about six millimetres in diameter and the bottom sieve has holes two millimetres in diameter. As the grain passes through the machine, large impurities such as corn, soybeans and unthreshed wheat are removed by the top screen, while the finer bottom sieve allows small impurities such as mustard seed, buckwheat and sand to pass through for separate collection. The partially cleaned wheat tails over the finer sieve. As it falls off the end of the sieve, it is aspirated by air currents that remove chaff and dust to a separate outlet.  1, fiche 3, Anglais, - milling%20separator

La pratique générale au Canada est de n'effectuer qu'un seul passage du mélange préparé au nettoyage. La première machine à nettoyer est un séparateur de mouture semblable au séparateur de réception utilisé au silo, mais d'une plus grande précision dans la séparation des impuretés plus grosses ou plus petites que le blé. Le tamis supérieur a de grandes perforations d'environ 6 mm de diamètre, et celui du bas des trous de 2mm. A mesure que le grain passe dans la machine, les grosses impuretés comme le maïs, le soja et le blé non battu sont refusés par le tamis du haut, tandis que celui du bas laisse passer les petites impuretés comme les graines de moutarde et de sarrazin et le sable qui sont recueillis. Low dockage grain can be cleaned in one pass through the cylinder machine. In high dockage grain, however, some small seeds and wild oats may be left in the cleaned grain. If so, the grain is elevated to a small garner and fed to a screen or another indent cylinder unit. When a shipper requests special cleaning of a carlot of grain not otherwise provided for in Regulations and the terminal elevator manager agrees to the request, the official sample is analysed and the percentage by weight and the grade(except in the case of screenings) of each portion of the sample so separated is indicated on inspection records and on the back of certificates. Inspection records show the notation "release as per special machine separation. "The elevator must issue an outturn showing the grades and quantities reported. Lorsqu'un expéditeur demande le nettoyage spécial d'une wagonnée de grain, pour lequel il n'y a aucune disposition dans le Règlement, et l'exploitant du silo terminal est d'accord avec cette demande, on analyse l'échantillon officiel et on inscrit le pourcentage en poids et le grade (sauf dans le cas de criblures) de chaque portion de l'échantillon ainsi séparé sur les documents d'inspection et au verso des certificats. Les documents d'inspection porteront la mention «livré après séparation mécanique spéciale». L'exploitant du silo doit faire un rapport de déchargement indiquant les grades et les quantités inscrits.
