The crib annex obtains its name because it is built using the same cribbing principles as the elevator. It is usually partitioned into storage bins 2. 7 metres by 2. 7 metres or 3. 7 metres by 3. 7 metres depending upon the amount of strength required to coincide with the desired height of the annex. These annexes are normally about the same height as the elevator and for this reason, gravity is not used for filling them. Instead, they are filled using a horizontal grain auger or drag conveyor which leads from the elevator distributor spout to the selected annex bin. An instrument or device used for obtaining representative grain samples. It usually is made of metal and consists of two tubes from six ins. to eight ft. in length. These tubes are slotted on the sides, and one is closely fitted but freely moving within the other. When closed this instrument may be inserted in a bag or bin of grain and then opened to admit a representative sample from each and every layer of the grain. Grain from the garner flows into the hopper scale filling it to its initial setting; then the garner gate closes. At the same time, the gate of the hopper scale opens, releasing the weighed grain on to the conveyor; this conveyor takes the grain to the shipping leg where it is elevated and loaded into the car. Cette annexe est ainsi appelée du fait que la technique de construction utilisée est la même que pour le silo d'où son nom de permanente. Sa hauteur est souvent la même que celle du silo et l'intérieur est divisé en cellules de 2,7 mètres sur 2,7 mètres ou de 3,7 mètres sur 3,7 mètres suivant la charge que peuvent supporter les murs par rapport à la hauteur. Ces annexes ayant à peu près la même hauteur que le silo, on n'utilise pas la gravité pour les remplir. Au lieu de cela, une vis ou un convoyeur horizontal transporte le grain du distributeur du silo à la cellule choisie de l'annexe. The "Index-grain apparatus"(...) is a sedimentation device in which the free fall of grains is slowed by three nozzle-like constrictions which cause turbulence that results in better grading of the grains. In order to distinguish between the single grain fractions which settle in a graduated, conical, water-filled sedimentation vessel, a colored index set of three known grain fractions is added to the sediment before separation : 1 cm^three black grains in the grade 0. 02-0. 035 mm 1 cm^three red grains in the grade 0. 063-0. 11 mm 1 cm^three black grains in the grade 0. 2-0. 35 mm(...) The suspension with the added index set is poured into the filling tube, which is closed from below with a float stopper. The stopper is opened by squeezing a rubber bulb on the filling tube, and the suspension can immediately enter the lower sedimentation tube. The filling tube has a constriction that generates turbulence. The grains therefore enter the sedimentation tube pregraded.
