Because of the importance of standard samples, great care is taken in their preparation. Quantities of grain sufficient to prepare standard samples of each grade are obtained from primary elevators and from rail cars unloading at terminal elevators. About 50 tonnes are collected and sent annually to the Commission's Inspection Division. The samples are representative of the major grading factors peculiar to that crop and of a cross-section of all production areas. Most factors considered in grading must be determined by visual examination. For the sake of comparison to assist in grading, or to set grading levels, standard samples are prepared annually for all grain grades defined in Schedule 1 of the act and for any other special grades established by the Commission. All standard samples are prepared by the Commission's Inspection Division. They are submitted for review to the Grain Standards Committees, which recommend to the Commission that standard samples for different grades be approved. The grain discharges onto a conveyor belt and is transferred to the boot of the receiving leg. En route it passes under a large electro magnet which removes all ferrous metal from the grain. It is, therefore, very important that the sample be truly representative of the complete parcel. Most grain officially inspected on entry or discharge from a terminal elevator is officially sampled by an automatic sampler installed and operated under supervision of the Commission's Inspection Division. The automatic sampler is a mechanical device that takes a representative sample from a stream of grain moving on a belt or through a spout. If producer and elevator manager do not agree upon grade and dockage, the elevator manager issues an interim elevator receipt showing the weight of grain delivered. He sends an agreed upon sample, known as a grade and dockage sample, to the Canadian Grain Commission for official grading.
