It is usually partitioned into storage bins 2. 7 metres by 2. 7 metres or 3. 7 metres by 3. 7 metres depending upon the amount of strength required to coincide with the desired height of the annex. These annexes are normally about the same height as the elevator and for this reason, gravity is not used for filling them. Instead, they are filled using a horizontal grain auger or drag conveyor which leads from the elevator distributor spout to the selected annex bin. The main storage bins are usually hoppered and an automatic conveying system moves the grain to intermediate storage bins from which different grades are blended into the milling grist. The main storage bins are arranged to feed back into the intake elevator to provide for turning over the grain from one bin to another. This turning over is sometimes necessary to keep the grain in sound condition. Provision is also made for drying grain. The batch-in-bin drying process involves using a bin as a batch dryer. A 3 to 4-foot deep layer of grain is placed in the bin and the fan and heater started. Typical drying air temperatures are 120 to 160F with airflow rates of 8 to 15 cfm/bushel. Drying begins at the floor and progresses upward. Grain at the floor of the bin becomes excessively dry while the top layer of the batch remains fairly wet. The grain is cooled in the bin after it is dried. Some batch-in-bin dryers hold the grain being dried in a layer near the roof. After the grain is dried it is dropped to the bin floor where it is cooled. Canada's cold winters tend to minimize insect infestation but occasionally it occurs and fumigation is conducted under the Grain Commission's supervision. The most common treatment involves placing phostoxin tablets in the infested grain as it flows from conveyor belt to storage bin. The bin is sealed and the tablets emit a gas which kills the insects. The Binishell pneumatic-form construction technique for bulk grain is another interesting development in concrete storage. In this concept, reinforcing steel is laid out on the ground, concrete is poured on top of it, and the pneumatic form lifts the whole "pie" up from the centre to its final dome shape. After the concrete sets, the pneumatic form is removed. This type of dome can also be erected with vertical sidewalls to produce a conventional bulk storage bin, with a diameter as large as 30 metres. As new and larger elevators were built, companies often moved old elevators beside one another and used them as annexes to a new elevator. In these facilities, grain is elevated to the top of the operating elevator, moved by screw auger to the distributor spout of the annexed elevator and then allowed to flow by gravity to the desired storage bin. Cette annexe est ainsi appelée du fait que la technique de construction utilisée est la même que pour le silo d'où son nom de permanente. Sa hauteur est souvent la même que celle du silo et l'intérieur est divisé en cellules de 2,7 mètres sur 2,7 mètres ou de 3,7 mètres sur 3,7 mètres suivant la charge que peuvent supporter les murs par rapport à la hauteur. Ces annexes ayant à peu près la même hauteur que le silo, on n'utilise pas la gravité pour les remplir.
