With the advent of better graphic displays and faster computers, virtual reality and augmented reality have become an area of intense research with the expectation that substantial benefits can be derived from the ability to simulate or augment reality with computer-generated visual graphics. One such system is known as cave automatic virtual environment(CAVE) in which a large theater is situated within a larger room where the walls of the room or "cave" are made of rear projection screens and the floor is a down projection screen. A user of the virtual environment wears special glasses to see 3-D [tridimensional] graphics on the walls and floor of the cave.

Graphic Feedback. Very effective feedback can be given graphically. Extended verbal explanations may sometimes be eliminated in favor of a well-placed arrow or picture. Figure... shows a display..., in which the student must identify points on a number line by indicating the numbers where balloons are located. When the student gives a correct number, a dart flies across the screen and pops a balloon. The process of directly drawing lines by sweeping an electron beam over the surface of a CRT was brought up in the raster-scan section. There is a class of display devices known as vector or refresh graphic displays that use this technique. A typical system contains a graphics memory that holds a display file of line segments to be drawn on the screen. The display processor repeatedly cycles through this list of lines, thereby refreshing the screen.

Intelligence can be added to the disk controller to determine if a graphic element meets certain display characteristics, such as being a specifically searched-for element or being within the range of the display screen or being nonintelligence information. This hardware is called a disk scanner. Disk scanners are much more than simple add-on items. A disk controller must be completely redesigned to incorporate one, and very high-performance logic... is required to handle the data in real time.

A shape table is a list of graphic elements(usually chained lines in a default-length, relative format) that is stored in a computer's memory. The list defines a commonly used shape or symbol. When the symbol is used, the program driving the display refers to this table to generate an element on the screen. The program determines where the element will be placed(by selecting the absolute start point of the relative string), and the shape table defines the element.
