Shortcomings in our understanding of natural language comprehension and generation have forced system developers to make more use of the visual medium(i. e., graphical displays, including animation). In this medium, human-machine communication is realized through the use of visual objects such as icons and menus. The information that the user can communicate to the machine, normally the various operations and commands that the system can realize, is structured as a specialized interface language, a visual language in the case of a graphical interface.

The application provides a GUI [graphical user interface] through which NESS users can access and manage the information in the legacy mainframe database. The features of the graphical interface reflect the functions available in the mainframe application, but provide a "friendlier" face and standard MS Windows functionality. Functions of GUI NESS is the management of information related to employers, orders, and job seekers at HRDC' s [Human Resources Development Canada] and maintaining history files on HRDC clients-individual as well as employers.

In hypermedia, sound re-establishes the audio space of conversation, and presents the possibilities of parallel and branching narrative soundtracks, which can be presented graphically so the user can choose between them, switching from one sound-track to another. It then becomes possible to participate in choosing the direction for the evolution of a story, or to access different viewpoints on a particular subject or body of knowledge, or even to choose a preferred language from several foreign language commentaries. "Interactive audio" techniques like these are used within the context of a graphical interface that provides special screen buttons or "icons" on which the user has to click to trigger the audio sequences-so that, for example, clicking on an icon featuring the French tricolour might call up a spoken commentary in French.
