The first segment to be launched into orbit, designated Z1, will not permanently attach to other truss segments. The Z1 segment is a 10 ft (3 m) cubelike truss made from six machined bulkheads that are bolted together. The truss houses four control moment gyroscopes that form part of the guidance, navigation, and control system. The location of Z1 is nearly in the middle of the station, which makes it an ideal location for the gyroscopes. A micrometeor shield composed of three sheets of 0.25 in. (6 mm) aluminum about 5 in. (127 mm) apart protects the sensitive gyroscopes from debris. The 18,300 lb (8,300 kg) Z1 segment is currently scheduled to be launched by the end of this year. The truss is a transitional structure that will connect to the pressurized Unity module already on orbit. Astronauts will tighten 16 motorized bolts on the circular coupling on the Unity module side into nuts on Z1 and connect the associated utility plug-ins. The TERA [Temporary Equipment Restraint Aid] is equipped with a grapple fixture which allows for interfacing with the station(and shuttle) RMS [Remote Manipulator System] and which provides a restraint for a single ORU [Orbital Replaceable Unit] and its supporting cargo subcarrier. The TERA serves as well as a mounting location for the APRF [Articulating Portable Foot Restraint]. A second ORU can be stored temporarily on the TERA by using a ball stack or an ORU tether installed on the side-mounted EVA [Extra-Vehicular Activity] changeout mechanism socket. Canadarm2 will normally move along the Space Station on the Mobile Base System, but it also has the ability to "walk" from place to place by moving from one grapple fixture on the exterior of the structure to the next, like an inchworm.... It is equipped with four television cameras, two mounted on the booms and one near each tip. Pour pouvoir contrôler efficacement tous ces systèmes, il a fallu développer une station de travail robotisée (RWS en anglais, pour Robotic Workstation) qui permet à une seule personne d'avoir la maîtrise de tous les degrés de liberté du télémanipulateur et des systèmes qui y sont rattachés. Cette station se retrouvera à deux endroits sur l'ISS [International Space Station], dans le module Destiny et dans la future coupole.
