Two types of hay are generally available to the horse owner : Seeds hay – cut from specially sown grass leys.... Meadow hay – cut from permanent pasture. This [hay] will contain whatever was growing at the time, often a wide variety of grasses and broad-leaved plants, some of which may be toxic. Hay is the result of the cutting, drying and storage of long stem plants, such as various grass or legume species. Grass species include timothy, orchardgrass, ryegrass, fescue, brome and bluegrass;... legume species includes alfalfa(lucerne), clover and birdsfoot trefoil.... grass hay provides sufficient protein to all classes of horse shown except for growing horses and lactating mares.... Le foin est composé principalement de plantes fourragères de la famille des graminées et des légumineuses. Parmi les graminées, on retrouve la fléole (ou mil), le brome, le dactyle, alors que les principales légumineuses sont la luzerne et le trèfle. La production de foin sec à haut contenu en légumineuse est complexe au niveau du séchage et de la conservation. Grazing Behaviour.... The horse will avoid grazing where there is a smell of horses droppings, reducing the possibility of picking up parasitic worm eggs and resulting in the characteristic rough areas of pastures that are continually grazed.... The sense of smell is also used to identify plant species, enabling horses to be selective of grass or herb species and also to avoid certain poisonous weeds, i. e. ragwort....
