Field margins. The treatment of the strip of ground, or field margin, adjacent to the hedge, has important effects on the establishment of the hedge, and on its developing wildlife value. Avoid routine cultivation of this strip, but either mow it to form a grass sward, or preferably sow it with a mixture of wildflowers and grasses. This type of mix is less vigorous than commercial strains of grass, and will compete less with the hedge for nutrients, and will require less frequent cutting. Its value for invertebrates and other organisms will be much higher than a mown grass sward.... Tapis vert, meaning literally a "green carpet", was first coined in the garden at Versailles in 1680 where André Le Nôtre used a mown grass strip punctuated by urns and statues to divide the main axis, the Allée Royale. This became a template for other grand schemes, including George Washington's plan for the landscaping of independent America's new capital. The term tapis vert has come to embrace a wider meaning, encompassing any area of lawn cut in a regular shape. It is also used to describe areas mown at various heights to produce patterns and it is here that the lawn could enjoy a degree of reinvention, assisted by advances in technology-most mowers can be adjusted by the flick of a lever to give various cutting heights. Strip, tile and farm drains are typical ways of collecting run-off from large, flat areas where drainage occurs in a "sheet fashion". Strip drains are similar to catch basins in that they have a sump area to collect settlement and a removable grate for easy maintenance. Both tile and farm drains consist of small trenches covered with grass. Since the tile drain is connected to an underground drainage system, it provides better drainage that the farm drain; but neither system works when the ground is frozen.... For the last three or so years a variant of strip grazing called block grazing has been used with both cows and sheep particularly when going through the winter using a slow rotation. Obviously if the length of rotation is say 40 days; then extra subdivision is needed since the average number of permanent paddocks on most dairy farms is only about 15-20. The extra subdivision is accomplished by using electric fences, but the main feature of the block grazing system is that the areas should be as square as possible.
