While most species of timber are susceptible to termite attack, the degree of susceptibility varies. Usually the durability of timbers against termites is assessed by what is known as the "graveyard test" in which stakes of standard dimension, of different species of timber, are arranged vertically in soil in a termite-infested site, with the top of the stakes protruding above ground like the headstones in a graveyard, and assessing the damage at intervals. During the 1820s, 1830s and 1840s, garden cemeteries were founded in most cities in Britain. Their characteristic appearance owes much to a British tradition of naturalistic landscape design but has particular resonances in the context of death and mourning in the nineteenth century. This article considers some of the factors that have been significant in the development of the British landscape cemetery, including public health, class relationships and foreign influences (particularly that of Père Lachaise cemetery in Paris). The experimental servicing satellite ESS applies robotics to resolve the problem of servicing a non-cooperative target in or near to a geostationary orbit, a region of space still out of reach to manned spaceflight.
