Tidal gravitational fields lead to differential deflection of light bundles. The size and shape of their cross sections are therefore changed. Since photons are neither emitted nor absorbed in the process of gravitational light deflection, the surface brightness of lensed sources remains unchanged. Changing the size of the cross section of a light bundle therefore changes the flux observed from a source. The different images in multiple-image systems generally have different fluxes. The images of extended sources, i. e. sources which can observationally be resolved, are deformed by the gravitational tidal field.

Si la source lumineuse est sensiblement un point au foyer du paraboloïde, le faisceau réfléchi est un faisceau cylindrique. Les réflecteurs de phares de marine ou d'automobiles sont souvent des miroirs paraboliques. Le miroir parabolique étant stigmatique pour le point à l'infini (son image est au foyer du paraboloïde), on l'utilise comme objectif dans certains télescopes.

L'impesanteur n'est donc pas provoquée par l'éloignement de la Terre ou de tout autre corps céleste attractif : l'accélération due à la gravité à une hauteur de 100 km par exemple n'est que de 4 % moindre qu'à la surface de la Terre. En réalité, l'impesanteur est ressentie lorsque l'accélération subie égale la gravité, ce qui recouvre aussi le cas où le champ de gravité serait nul, ce qui n'arrive pas puisque l'influence de la gravité est partout dans l'Univers.

Orbit control [consists in] controlling satellites to keep [them] flying on the designated orbit. When a satellite flies in low earth orbit(LEO), it gradually descends due to air drag. It is necessary to push the satellite back to the original orbit by activating station-keeping thrusters. Geostationary satellites do not descend due to air drag, however, they do de-orbit from their designated stationary position because the gravitational field of the Earth is not uniform and because the gravitational pull of the Sun and the Moon alters their orbit. In a similar way, geostationary satellites are pushed back to their original position by activating station-keeping thrusters.

Lowest level in the atmosphere at which the mean free path of the gas particles is long enough for them to travel appreciable distances without suffering a collision; some of the particles are then able to escape from the Earth's gravitational field if travelling at a sufficient speed.

L'hélium et l'hydrogène y sont les éléments prépondérants. Elle s'étend jusqu'à la limite extrême de l'atmosphère, soit 50 000 kilomètres. On ne trouve plus là que quelques atomes d'hydrogène.

The ROCSAT3/COSMIC(Constellation Observing System for Meteorology, Ionosphere and Climate) mission consists of a constellation of 6 low-earth orbiting satellites. In conducting the atmospheric limb sounding using the GPS radio occultation technique(which is the main objective of the mission), the satellite orbits are precisely determined at any given moment by GPS "high-low" satellite-to-satellite tracking. These precise orbit determination(POD) data contain useful information about the Earth's gravitational field and its time variations, for both geophysical and climate-related research.

erupting prominences. Although prominence equilibria are maintained on a long period of time, many quiescent prominences do ultimately erupt in a dramatic event lasting only a few hours. Incredibly, the eruption always occurs outwards, away from the surface, indicating that the magnetic field which originally supported the prominence has suddenly released its stored energy. This energy release is sufficient to drive the dense plasma outwards against the Sun's huge gravitational pull. After the eruption, most of the material does eventually fall back down towards the surface and the prominence will often reform again at the same location over the course of a few days.
