The most important city of the province of Quebec, but not its capital. It occupies all the Île de Montréal(or Montréal Island), the biggest island of the Hochelaga Archipelago, at the confluence of the St. Lawrence River and the Ottawa River. In 1535, Jacques Cartier visited the native village of Hochelaga on the slope of what he named "Mont Royal, "but by 1608, year of the foundation of Québec, all the Iroquoians were gone. At the same location, Ville-Marie was founded as a missionary colony by Paul de Chomedey de Maisonneuve in 1642, though it was not until the conclusion of the "Grande Paix"(peace treaty) of 1701 that the colony stopped living in a permanent state of war. The establishment became the great centre of the fur trade and a starting point for expeditions by the coureurs de bois and voyageurs of the time. Trade from the port and agriculture on the surrounding plains contributed to the development of the city. By the 1820s, its population outnumbered that of the city of Québec. A dynamic merchant class began to invest and "St. James Street, "now "la rue Saint-Jacques, "became the country's financial centre. Around 1831, large-scale immigration enabled the population of British origin to be the majority in the city but, at the time of Confederation in 1867 and after, the francophones were again in the majority, gradually making the city the centre of the French culture in America. Erected as a municipality in 1832, the city underwent a steady growth with the addition of the territories of 35 towns over the years. If Toronto grabbed the title of "Business Capital" by the end of the 20th Century, Montréal remained the "Metropolis of Canada. "In 1996, the metropolitan region grouped some 111 municipalities located on three of the islands of the Hochelaga Archipelago, Montréal Island, Jésus Island and Bizard Island, and, on the South Shore, the city of Longueuil and the seven others that were to be part of it on the 1 January 2002...

Érigée en municipalité en 1832, elle prend des dimensions imposantes à la faveur de 35 fusions de villes réalisées au fil des ans. Si, Toronto lui ravit le titre de «Capitale des affaires» à la fin du XXe siècle, elle conserve celui de «Métropole du Canada» et de «Ville aux cent clochers». En 1996, la région métropolitaine comprend environ 111 municipalités, celles occupant l'île de Montréal, l'île Jésus et l'île Bizard de l'archipel d'Hochelaga, et, sur la Rive-Sud, la ville de Longueuil [...]

Properly, litigation=the action or process of carrying on a suit in law or equity("OED") ;thus it does not refer to the suit itself, but to the maintenance of it. Here it seems to be used for trial :"As the rules became more numerous and more nicely distinguished, they became also less easily understood and applied by the great mass of people, until finally no one who had not given the subject particular attention could safely assume to conduct a litigation [read trial]".

An enzyme that possesses properties that specifically endows it with regulatory roles in metabolism.

Regulatory enzymes occupy key positions in metabolic pathways. The structural elements needed to make a regulatory enzyme are used with great selectivity and imposed only on those enzymes with which it will result in the maximum economy of the cell' s resources. An understanding of a particular multienzyme pathway usually suggests which enzymes might make attractive candidates for regulation. For example, many biosynthetic pathways involve a long chain of single chemical steps, each carried out by a discrete enzyme.... It is obviously most economical for the first enzyme of the pathway to be inhibited once sufficient end product is present.

There are two major types of such enzymes: (1) allosteric enzymes, whose catalytic activity is modulated through the noncovalent binding of a specific metabolite at a site on the protein other than the catalytic site, and (2) covalently modulated enzymes, which are interconverted between active and inactive forms by the action of other enzymes.

This September, The Arthritis Society's Joints in Motion Program will be making history as they team up with the Royal Canadian Legion to participate in the In Flanders Fields Marathon. This exhibition included 77 seriagraphs and serigraphic proofs produced for the Christmas card series. Twenty-six Canadian artists contributed to the series, among them several members of the Group of Seven who had already gained international recognition, including A. Y. Jackson, Lawren Harris, and Franklin Carmichael. It was A. Y. Jackson who encouraged William E. Coutts to issue the series. Jackson saw the production of the series as a source of revenue for some of the artists who were experiencing financial difficulties and also as an opportunity to create contemporary Canadian greeting cards. The "Painters of Canada" series began at the end of the 1920s and started an on-going tradition for Hallmark Cards Canada, the successor to the William E. Coutts Company. Unfortunately, the series that at first promised to be a great success was begun during the Depression and proved to be a financial failure. Nevertheless, the series was an artistic success. This exhibition was produced by the National Archives of Canada using many of the cards donated by Hallmark Cards Canada.

Hogmanay is the Scots word for the last day of the year and is synonymous with the celebration of the New Year in the Scottish manner. Its official date is the 31 December. However this is normally only the start of a celebration which lasts through the night until the morning of the 1 January or, in many cases, 2 January. The roots of Hogmanay reach back to the pagan celebration of the winter solstice. In Europe, this evolved into the ancient celebration of Saturnalia, a great Roman winter festival, where people celebrated completely free of restraint and inhibition. The Vikings celebrated Yule, which later became the Twelve Days of Christmas, or the "Daft Days" as they were sometimes called in Scotland. The winter festival went underground with the Protestant Reformation and ensuing years, but re-emerged near the end of the 17th century.

The Be-In seems almost a sacred event, harking back to medieval pageants, gypsy gatherings, or the great pow-wows of the American Indians. At the same time, it is a new and futuristic experience which, once refined, offers great promise.

When the bag-in-box concept is applied to dry products, it generally involves a bag inside a folding carton.... The evolutionary process eventually culminated in two basic methods of producing lined cartons. The first was a machine to automatically open a magazine-fed side-seamed carton and elevate it around vertically indexed mandrels where glue is applied to the bottom flaps and folded up against the end of the mandrel with great pressure.... [A]... lining machine... plunges a precut waxed-paper sheet into it by a system of reciprocating vertical mandrels.... The second method involves the use of a double package maker(DPM) which combines the carton forming/gluing operation with a lining feed mechanism which wraps the lining paper around a solid mandrel prior to the carton feed station. In this instance the carton blank is flat and side-seamed on the DPM. The lined carton is then discharged upright onto a conveyor leading to the filler and top closing machine.

The modern blow pipe accomplishes this same thing by blowing compressed air in the same end that the gas enters. The gas and air is thus mixed in the pipe as in the burners in modern day furnaces.
