The term "wedge" (as its French equivalent "cocheur") is a generic for angled-face irons, though more often used to mean the "sand wedge" because, of the "sand wedge" and the "pitching wedge", it is the iron more often found in a golf bag. Pour désigner ce bâton, on a d'abord utilisé l'anglicisme «pitching wedge», puis, dans les années 80, «wedge d'allée», jusqu'à ce que, sur la recommandation de l'Office de la langue française, on adopte «cocheur d'allée».
