GREENHOUSE PLASTIC [10 fiches]

Fiche 1 2025-10-30

Anglais

Subject field(s)
  • Plant and Crop Production
CONT

Greenhouse production is the practice of growing plants, vegetables, flowers and herbs within an enclosed space under controlled environmental conditions. The structure usually made from glass or plastic protects the crop from the cold, heat, wind, rain, and pests, while allowing optimum growing conditions to maximise yields.

Domaine(s)
  • Cultures (Agriculture)
CONT

Types of Plastic Coverings... Polyvinyl chloride film has very high emissivity for long-wave radiation, which creates slightly higher air temperatures in the greenhouse at night. UV inhibitors can increase the life of the film. It is more expensive than polyethylene film and tends to accumulate dirt, which must be washed off in winter for better light transmission.

OBS

polyvinyl chloride film; PVC film: terms officially approved by the Lexicon Project Committee (New Brunswick).

Épaisseurs des feutres : 50 et 120 mm.

DEF

Français

Domaine(s)

DEF

A new development in mulch technology is the wavelength-selective film. It provides much of the weed control benefit of black plastic mulch, but warms the soil more than does black mulch. Thermic films, such as the IR-303 Thermofilm, were originally developed as greenhouse covers. They are reputed to reduce maximum and increase minimum temperatures slightly more than standard polyethylene films. These thermic films may have a role as hoop-supported row covers(tunnels). In a preliminary trial in 1990, the combination of black mulch and tunnels of either Lutrasil or IR-303 Thermofilm produced greater early yield than either black film or wavelength-selective mulch films alone.

CONT

Weed control from herbicides applied before the mulch may break down in advance of crop maturity. An alternative to the clear mulch/herbicide system is the IRT or wavelength selective mulch system. IRT mulches provide similar soil warming to clear film, while controlling most weeds like black plastic.

Greenhouse plastics affect tomato pollination by influencing bee activity and bee loss through the ventilation systems. There is a significant difference in bee loss among plastic types.... CT plastic, one of the less commonly used greenhouse plastics, experienced less bee loss than AT Duratherm, Patilux, and both AT Bee Poly and De Klerk together.... The likely explanation for these results is that under CT plastic, bees are less able to visually detect the open vents because of the relatively small contrast between the transmitted light and the light through the vents. Our spectrophotometry results... indicate that of the plastics tested, only CT plastic allows transmission of UV light. Because of this, fewer bees fly out of these greenhouses and die during the winter months.

OBS

Greenhouse tomatoes and pollination by bumblebees. ... Bumble bee keeping in greenhouses has encountered some problems because of the escape of the bees ... through open vents in late winter and early spring. ... New understandings in insect colour vision (Backhaus 1993) have suggested ways by which the visual target of the open vents (daylight with UV) ... versus the greenhouse roof and walls (attenuated UV) can be disguised by coloured transparent flaps or blocked by screening so that the bees are not attracted and can not escape. The former would be easier and cheaper. UV light encourages the germination of spores of grey mould (Botrytis), so UV opaque plastics are favoured.

"High tunnels can be used ... for gourmet or specialty crops, or for organic farming. You even can put small fruit trees such as figs inside the structures." Explained simply, high tunnels are single-car garage-size structures covered with clear plastic sheeting to manipulate soil and air temperatures using the energy of the sun. ... a series of growth trials [will be conducted] in 24 research high tunnels, which are 36 feet long, 17 feet wide and 9 feet high. ... Commercial-size versions of high tunnels, which are 96 feet long, also protect plants from insects, diseases and wind damage, virtually eliminating field loss ...

CONT

High tunnels are not conventional greenhouses. But like plastic-covered greenhouses, they are generally quonset-shaped, constructed of metal bows that are attached to metal posts which have been driven into the ground about two feet deep. They are covered with one layer of 6-mil greenhouse-grade polyethylene, and are ventilated by manually rolling up the sides each morning and rolling them down in early evening. There is no permanent heating system although it is advisable to have a standby portable propane unit to protect against unexpected below-freezing temperatures. There are no electrical connections. The only external connection is a water supply for trickle irrigation. The ends of the tunnels are framed in, and may be made portable(removable) to facilitate easy access into the tunnel with a small tractor and tiller.

CONT

CONT

OBS

Greenhouse effect(...) The transparent glass or plastic walls and roof of the greenhouse transmit the shorter wavelength, visible light and infrared radiation from the sun but not the longer wavelengths. Thus, during the hours of daylight infrared radiation passes into the greenhouse and warms its atmosphere and the ground on which the house stands. The transparent walls and roof of the greenhouse partly reflect and partly absorb the longer wavelength radiation. Subsequently the walls and roofs re-emit the absorbed radiation into the house. Coating the glass with a non-heat-radiating film, which is transparent to sunlight, further maximizes the heating effect of radiation received.
