[The] new Bayesian model estimates the proportion of pups that are unavailable to the survey because they have moved out of the area. The new birth distribution model should be used to refit the complete time series of pup production in order to incorporate it in future assessments. This is the second assessment that has resulted in a significant downward revision in the previous estimate of grey seal abundance. These changes are due to a slowing in the rate of increase in pup production, using a different assessment model, and a new male : female sex ratio. The new model provides a significant downward revision in estimated juvenile survival and indicates that the dynamics of the grey seal population are changing relatively rapidly in a manner that is not well understood.

Canadian Football League West Division.... The West Division is one of the two regional divisions of the Canadian Football League. Although the CLF was not founded until 1958, the West Division and its clubs are descended from earlier leagues.... Pre-1936. It is generally found that natural objects possess self-similarity and self-affinity in their structures. Fractal analysis, a technique based on these properties, has been widely used in various research applications. In the active remote sensing of the earth terrain, it is possible to extract this fractal information from the images obtained. In this application, fractal surface dimension, an important parameter in fractal analysis, can be employed as an additional feature to classify different landuse areas. This fractal surface dimension is generally related to the roughness of the surface. By keeping the x and y coordinates of the pixels of the image, and taking the grey level of each pixel as its z coordinate, a three-dimensional surface can be constructed. The calculation of fractal surface dimension can then be carried out on that surface.

Pour analyser des signaux possédant une régularité variant fortement d'un point à un autre, il est préférable d'utiliser l'analyse multifractale. Nous proposons un nouvelle approche à la segmentation d'images de télédétection basée sur l'analyse des composants fractals de l'image. Elle ne nécessite aucune connaissance a priori sur l'image, et étudie la régularité locale et globale par le biais de l'exposant de Hölder et du spectre multifractal. Les singularités et les irrégularités d'un signal sont souvent porteuses de la plus grande part d'information.

The counter canter refers to the horse’s ability to take the unnatural lead. In a circle to the right the horse would counter canter in his left lead, in a circle to the left he’d be on the right lead. When used properly, the counter canter can be a tool to encourage the horse to travel with an improved capacity for straightness, balance and rated cadence or speed. ... The counter canter or a disunited lead can crop up when a horse is positioned incorrectly for a canter depart or lead change. Make sure you’ve asked for the counter canter when it shows up.

In an intentional counter canter, the horse’s body is upright as the lead leg follows the bridge of the nose, which is tipped ever-so-slightly to the outside. In an accidental wrong lead, the horse’s nose is tipped to the inside of the circle causing the inside shoulder to drop when the lead is picked up. They are very different, even though the footfall is the same.

grisaille ... Such works were often produced in the Renaissance to simulate sculpture, as in Uccello’s equestrian portrait of Sir John Hawkswood (Cathedral of Florence). Painters of stained glass frequently used grisaille. In the 17th cent. grisaille was prized for interior decoration.

The use of the French word can be traced only to 1625, since although grisaille painting was done in preceding centuries, it was not referred to as such. The alternative expression "peinture en camaïeu (gris)" is also documented only more recently. In the 16th century there are occasional references to "dead colour", but this term is no longer used. At the time of its origin, in the medieval period, grisaille painting was simply called "painting in black and white", as is clear, for example, from an entry in the inventories of Jean de France, Duc de Berry, of 1401, 1413 and 1416: ’Item, unes petites heures de Nostre Dame...enluminées de blanc et de noir’. However, this description is not very precise, as grisaille painting was never merely black and white at that time but was always combined with (more or less sparingly used) colours. The term grisaille, as commonly used today, itself only inadequately describes the various modes it subsumes. Their only common feature is the more or less exclusive use of non-coloured pigments, while they diverge technically and aesthetically to an often astonishing extent.
